West Ottawa's Harbor Lights Middle School added to state outbreak report

There was one new COVID-19 outbreak in area school buildings last week, according to the state’s School-Related Cluster and Outbreak Report.

An update posted Monday, Dec. 13, lists West Ottawa’s Harbor Lights Middle School among 47 new outbreaks. The building was listed with three student cases in a single core group.

This is the sixth straight week of at least one K-12 outbreak in the Holland area, with multiple outbreaks reported each of the past five weeks. Prior to the current six-week run of outbreaks, there had been just one local K-12 building listed in the previous six updates.

West Michigan Academy of Arts and Academics in Spring Lake, also with three cases, was the only other Ottawa County school listed in the report. There were no outbreaks or clusters listed for Allegan County.

There were 34 active student cases of COVID-19 at West Ottawa Public Schools as of Monday, according to the district dashboard. There were eight cases at Harbor Lights Middle and six each at West Ottawa High and Great Lakes Elementary.

So far this school year, there have been 476 student cases in West Ottawa schools.

Holland Christian had 42 student and 12 staff cases active in the district as of Monday morning, one more than the district reported Friday morning. The active cases include 15 students at both Rose Park Elementary and the high school.

There have been 92 student and 33 staff member cases of COVID-19 at Holland Christian this year.

Saugatuck Public Schools reported one new case in the district over the weekend, an individual at Douglas Elementary. The district has now seen 33 cases this school year.

Black River Public School updated its dashboard Monday, showing two new cases in the previous 24 hours. There have now been 66 cases at BRPS this school year, including eight in December.

Hope College reported nine students currently in isolation with COVID-19 in an update Monday, bringing the semester total to 160. The college has administered a total of 5,087 tests this semester.

Grand Valley State University reported 127 active cases in an update Monday, down from just over 200 reported Friday, Dec. 10. The active cases include 47 students living off campus in Kent County, 44 living off campus in Ottawa County and 20 living on campus.

The seven-day average for new cases per day at GVSU was down to 13.29 per day Monday after being as high as 26 per day earlier in December.
