Welcome to The Dirt! I’m real estate reporter Kimberly Miller with the latest developments in the sizzling market.

Is nothing sacred in South Florida? Sure, the Town of Palm Beach protects its landmark buildings as fiercely as security guards protect Mar-a-Lago, um, except for that opera singer who drove through barricades that time and the mastermind college freshmen who sashayed past the secret service, and, oh yeah, that pesky FBI raid.

But what about us mainlanders? We need some of our auld lang syne kept intact too, even if it's disco balls and Donkey Kong and Tootie's roller skates from the Facts of Life.

Alas, the last roller skating rink in Palm Beach County closed this past weekend and there's an unusual link there to Ukraine.

Also, lead business writer Alexandra Clough ties up the loose ends in the tragic tale of the missing cream for the steak au poivre at La Goulue. No, really, it's a good yarn about a beloved restaurant that suffered a speed bump but expects a bright season ahead.

The family that has owned Atlantis Skateway since 1975 made the difficult decision to sell the building at 3100 Jog Road this summer after countless Hokey Pokeys and chicken dances.

A California-based limited liability corporation linked to a couple who are native to Ukraine bought the rink. A little digging found that the family has ice hockey in its blood, and it's probably safe to say the rink's future might involve frozen water and a Zamboni. (Not a flaming one though, although that would add to the excitement.)

Lawsuits plaguing La Goulue in the rearview mirror

Firstly, am I the only one who didn't know La Goulue means "the gluttonous woman" or "greedy gut" in French slang? Seems like an odd name. I kept picturing the "wafer thin mint" scene in The Meaning of Life. So I looked it up on the magical Google and realized the name La Goulue has quite a storied history and I really do just belong playing Donkey Kong at the roller rink.

Anyway, the Palm Beach sister location of the revered New York restaurant suffered a legal kerfuffle that involved, among other things, menu items such as a famous cream. You'll have to read Alex's excellent wrap up to find out more.

The Nora district is hot, hot, hot these days even if it's not scheduled to be finished until early 2024.

But the guys bringing the new hip area to downtown are also setting their sites on residential real estate in West Palm Beach. The better part of a block of Nottingham Boulevard west of Dixie Highway was bought by NDT Development with plans for luxury townhomes with eye-catching prices.

Trump's taxes are how much?!

Luxury real estate reporter Darrell Hofheinz has the scoop on former President Donald Trump's tax bill for Mar-a-Lago and a few other properties he owns. They are spectacularly high.

Everyone knows real estate went wild on the island during the pandemic, and higher property taxes are one of the results. But, as Darrell says, Trump might have a few other things on his mind right now.

Ho-hum, another billionaire selling a home for $100-plus million

It's getting harder and harder to break home sale records in Palm Beach County, and, unbelievably, the $145 million asking price for a beachfront estate doesn't even come close.

Oracle's Larry Ellison has his Seminole Landing property on the market for the aforementioned price tag. The aforementioned billionaire also holds the record for Florida's most expensive residential purchase for a $173 million deal in Manalapan.
