West River runners Clarkson, Birnbaum repeat at state cross-country meet

Belle Fourche senior Sawyer Clarkson captured his third individual title and Rapid City Stevens senior Simeon Birnbaum also repeated to spearhead the performances of more than 720 runners Saturday in the 2022 South Dakota State High School Cross Country Championships.

The event featured 5,000-meter races for boys and girls in Class AA, A and B and was held at the Broadland Creek Golf Course in Huron.

Here's a recap by class:

CLASS AA

Birnbaum successfully defended his title in the Class AA boys' race, winning in a time of 15 minutes and 16.19 seconds. He won by nearly a minute over Harrisburg senior Cashton Johnson, who moved up from ninth a year ago. Pierre junior Jared Lutmer, Yankton senior Zach Fedde and Rapid City Stevens senior Grady Loos rounded out the top 5.

Sean Kilpatrick added a ninth-place finish to help Stevens repeat as the team champion. The Raiders finished with score of 122, followed by Yankton at 142 and Sioux Falls Lincoln 146.

It ended up being a good day for Stevens, who also won the Class AA girls division team title for the first time since 2-014. The last time the Raiders' swept the team title was in 2002. Stevens edged Brandon Valley 96-100 for the title, followed by Sioux Falls Lincoln (115).

Lincoln's charge was led by senior Ali Bainbridge, who won the individual race in a time of 17:26.09. She was the state runner-up a year ago. O'Gorman sophomore Libby Castelli, third a year ago, also moved up a spot to take second in 17:50.80.

Stevens senior Brionna Holso, Spearfish eighth-grader Peyton VanDeest and Brandon Valley freshman Addison Scholten rounded out the top 5. All three were top 10 finishers in 2021.

CLASS A

Clarkson's capped his successful high school cross country by winning the Class A boys' race in 15:30.28, finishing nearly 30 seconds ahead of teammate and runner-up Lane Krautschun (16:06.24). Krautschun, a junior, won the Class B boys' race last year while running for Bison.

Clarkson also won state Class A titles in 2019 and 2021 and helped the Broncs win their first-ever state team championship with a score of 38. Hill City was second (46) and Sioux Falls Christian third (59).

Junior Luke Ruppert of Hill City was third, followed by seniors Isaac Davelaar of Sioux Falls Christian and Gage Grohs of Custer.

Sioux Falls Christian had a three-year run of state championships come to an end in the boys division, but the Charger girls softened the blow by winning their first title by a 30-82 margin over Chamberlain, Defending champion Custer was third at 84.

Sioux Valley sophomore Isabelle Bloker, who finished third in 2021, took the individual race in 18:32.67. Sioux Falls Falls Christian freshman Natalie Smith took second (18:44.53). Senior Jade Ecoffey of Red Cloud, senior Ramsey Karim of Custer and junior Heidi Olson of Mobridge-Pollock added top-5 finishes. They each placed in the top 10 in 2021.

Freshman Ellie Maddox of Sioux Falls Christian, the defending champion, placed 17th.

Class B

Individual honors in Class B went to first-time winners Josiah Schroeder of Canistota and Emery Larson of Chester Area.

Schroeder, who was the runner-up in 2021, claimed the boys' race in 16:38.25 with juniors Tavin Schroeder of Freeman Academy-Marion, Nicholas Schlachter of Potter County, Lincoln Woodring of Northwestern and Waekly Burns of Philip. Schlachter was fifth and T. Schroeder eighth in 2021.

Larson capped her first year as a cross country runner in style, rolling to victory in the Class B girls' race in a time of 18:15.24. Defending champion Ella Boekelheide, a freshman from Northwestern, took second in 19:19.24.

Arlington freshman Kaelyn Ulschmid placed third for the second-straight year with freshmen Autumn Fallis of Highmore-Harrold and Dannika Kaup of Potter County following. Fallis took fifth and Kaup seventh in 2021.

Kaup's performance helped Potter County capture its first state team title as a coop. Potter County won by a 24-60 margin over Arlington. Gayville-Volin finished third at 64.

Philip's boys claimed their first state title since 2014, winning with a score of 20. Northwestern (38) and Freeman Academy-Marion (53) were second and third, respectively, for the second-straight year.

The top six teams and 25 individuals in each of the six races received awards.
