West Salem's Avery Meier wins Statesman Journal Athlete of the Week

West Salem track and field athlete Avery Meier is the Statesman Journal's Athlete of the Week.

Meier won the newspaper's poll for top area athletes, which is voted on by readers.

She set personal records in the 800 meters (2:21.53) and 1,500 meters (4:54.92) at the Titan Track Classic. Her 800 time is top in the CVC this season, and her 1,500 time is second-best.

Here is another look at the other nominees this week.

Rowan Thompson, South Salem softball: She pitched four games for the Saxons in the North Medford spring break tournament and won three of them. In 23 innings, she allowed 12 hits and six earned runs, and had 43 strikeouts to 11 walks.

Shawn Parker, Sprague track and field: He has the fastest CVC time in the 300 hurdles (42.06 on March 22 against West Salem), and the second-best time in the 110-meter hurdles (16.14 in the Titan Track Classic).

Ethan Kleinschmit, Kennedy baseball: He pitched a shutout in the Trojans’ 1-0 win against North Marion.
