West Side man arrested, charged in killing of 22-year-old woman in South Shore in April

A West Side man has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder in the April 2020 slaying of a 22-year-old woman in the South Shore neighborhood, Chicago police said Thursday.

Dakari Grayer, 32, of the 1100 block of South Mayfield Avenue in The Island neighborhood, was arrested Tuesday by the Great Lakes Fugitive Task Force in the 5000 block of West Augusta Boulevard in the Austin neighborhood, police said. He is alleged to have shot and killed Mariah Edwards in the early hours of April 16.

Police at the time said that officers responded after hearing gunshots and discovered Edwards unresponsive on the sidewalk in the 7000 block of South Clyde Avenue with gunshot wounds to the chest. She later was pronounced dead at the University of Chicago Medical Center.

Edwards had been “arguing with unknown individuals who were inside of a black vehicle at which point someone inside shot her,” according to a statement from police issued just after her death.

Grayer was due in bond court Thursday.
