WEST VILLAGE, NY — With the city's official COVID-19 status getting upgraded to "medium" on Monday, the West Village now boasts near the top virus rate in the five boroughs.

It is not the first time that the West Village has neared the top of the city's COVID rate.

Amid the omicron surge before the beginning of 2022, the 10014 ZIP code posted the highest positivity rate in all five boroughs at 15.09 percent from Dec. 12 to 18.

The case rate in the city now stands at 200 per 100,000 people, health Commissioner Ashwin Vasan said Monday.

"As a practical matter, what this means for New Yorkers is that they must exercise even greater caution than they have the last few weeks," Vasan said in a statement.

COVID-19 infections have steadily increased for weeks as an even-more-contagious subvariant of omicron known as BA.2 takes hold in the city.
