West Virginia used 'Horns Down' signal for a play, but Texas got the last laugh

During its win over Texas a few weeks ago, West Virginia was flagged twice for doing the “Horns Down,” which is turning UT’s signature “Hook ‘Em Horns” hand sign and turning it toward the ground. It’s something that Texas takes pretty seriously.

One of the times a flag came out was after WVU quarterback Will Grier ran in the game-winning two-point conversion in the final seconds. Grier flashed the Horns Down to the UT fans.

On Saturday night against Oklahoma State, WVU ran the same play, this time for a touchdown on fourth-and-goal. And when the coaches called the play in from the sidelines, you’ll never guess what the signal was.

That’s right. Horns Down. Here’s how the play worked out:

It went to the left against Texas:

After the loss to WVU, Texas coach Tom Herman wondered if the two-point conversion should have been taken off the board because Grier was “taunting” on his way to the end zone. Perhaps that was the impetus for WVU to use Horns Down to signal the play.

Texas got the last laugh on Saturday

Grier’s touchdown run gave West Virginia a 41-31 lead with 7:37 to go. However, the defense could not hold on to the lead. Oklahoma State came back and won 45-41, knocking the Mountaineers out of the College Football Playoff race.

Texas was pretty happy about it, and fired back with this hilariously timed tweet.

That’s too good.

West Virginia and Texas could meet in the Big 12 title game

While the loss knocked West Virginia from the CFP picture, WVU can clinch a spot in the Big 12 title game by beating Oklahoma at home next weekend. If that happens, WVU’s opponent in the title game would likely be Texas.

Because UT beat Iowa State on Saturday night, it can seal a berth in the title game with a win over Kansas next Friday.

That would be a really fun — and potentially heated — rematch.
