Westampton man accused of killing cellmate at Atlantic County Jail

MAYS LANDING - A Burlington County man being held in a jail here is accused of killing his cellmate in a bloody attack.

Aahznier Hayes, 22, of Westampton was found standing over the unconscious victim, 52-year-old Kenneth Raymond of Ventnor, at the Atlantic County Jail, a court record says.

A corrections officer discovered the scene around 12:10 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 30, according to a probable cause statement.

The officer saw blood "throughout the floor and walls of the cell, as well as on Hayes’ clothing and hands," the statement says.

"A witness advised detectives that earlier in the day Hayes told Raymond he wanted to fight him," the statement continues.

The witness also reported seeing Hayes "punching, kicking, and stomping" the victim, it says.

Raymond was pronounced dead after being taken to a hospital.

The Ventnor man had been held at the Mays Landing jail since March 11, records show. Hayes had a booking date of June 20.

Additional details were not released.

Hayes was charged with murder.

The charge is only an allegation. Hayes has not been convicted in the case.
