Westbound Interstate 72 in Illinois reopens after repairs, but eastbound to close

A section of westbound Interstate 72 closed after a pothole developed in a construction zone reopened Tuesday afternoon after two days of repairs.

Illinois Department of Transportation spokesperson Paul Wappel said that traffic on I-72 between Veterans Parkway and Wabash Avenue reopened early Tuesday afternoon after it was closed due to the discovery of a pothole on an old section of bridge pavement on the westbound side of the highway.

Drivers traveling the busy section of the highway were diverted to Veterans Parkway towards Wabash Avenue, returning to the road at the Wabash intersection.

The bridge is currently being repaired as part of a $5.9 million project that will install a new deck for the bridge, along with resurfacing and repairs to the structure and retaining walls. The section where the pothole developed was not yet resurfaced when it developed Sunday.

Wappel said that the same section of eastbound I-72 will be closed starting Wednesday at 9 a.m. in order to conduct a similar series of repairs. Work should be completed by the end of the week.
