Westcott-Wilcox gives residents the means to live independently

Jun. 8—DANIELSON — Community, independence and comfort are key elements of care that Westcott- Wilcox Elderly Residential Housing Inc. has provided to its residents for more than 100 years. " Our goal is to keep quality of life as high as possible," Westcott- Wilcox Elderly Residential Housing Executive Director Christine Farner said. " To have the residents be able to be as independent and as comfortable in their environment as possible." Westcott- Wilcox is an independent living facility, offering residential housing to the 62-plus population and those who are looking for a strong sense of community atmosphere.

" Here at Westcott- Wilcox, it gives residents the benefit of living independently, yet it gives them the support of having three meals a day as well as intellectually and socially stimulating recreational activities," Farner said.

Residential care includes three nutritional, home- cooked meals each day, weekly housekeeping services, a fully equipped laundry room, a community living and dining room, 24-hour staffing, interactive recreational activities and easy parking, along with internet, cable, heat, electric, sewer and water.

The facility features 11 private rooms, which are " quaintly furnished" with a half- bathroom and have three large windows for ample sunlight and views, according to the Westcott- Wilcox website.

" We offer a community environment that's comfortable for our residents along with their family members," Farner said.

Differing greatly from an assisted living or nursing home facility, residents of Westcott- Wilcox are free to come and go as they please, living their own lives exactly how they choose to.

" There's no restriction whatsoever," Farner said, in regards to residents' travel and independent living needs.

Its location on 50 Capron St. in Danielson offers many conveniences within walking distance, such as the town library, pharmacy, banks, churches, beauty salons and the local farmers market.

Additionally, Westcott- Wilcox Elderly Residential Housing Inc. is on the Northeast Connecticut Transit District route, so residents can travel with ease.

A community atmosphere is created through residents being able to socialize freely inside and outside the facility as well as through a multitude of engaging recreational events planned throughout the year.

The home itself is also actively involved in the greater community, working to build and maintain relationships with the town and local businesses.

" Being a part of the community is very important to me and it's important to the residents," Farner said.

Westcott- Wilcox Elderly Residential Housing Inc. is fully licensed by the state of Connecticut and is a member of the Connecticut Association of Residential Care Homes and the Northeast Connecticut Chamber of Commerce.
