Western Avenue paved in time for school open houses

COLDWATER — The quarter-mile portion of  Western Avenue milled five weeks ago in front of Lakeland Elementary and Legg Middle School was paved Saturday by contractor Thompson Construction.

Road closed signs were down in time for the Monday transportation open house at Lakeland Monday morning and Tuesday’s open house at Legg.

Coldwater City Manager Keith Baker said repaving on Candlewood and Northshore Drive nearby would occur this week as weather allows.

The Arrowhead neighborhood work will follow.

Baker met with Thompson last week about completing the work after the road surface was milled up and then road closed signs erected for the five weeks.

The manager said repaving of Butters Avenue from U.S. 12 south to Race also will start next week, closing that road.

Work on the U.S.12 bridge continues with one lane alternating traffic. The construction crews are now tearing out and pouring new driveway entrances along the south side of U.S. 12.

As work progresses along the street to the east from the bridge, the entrance to Rotary Park will be closed to all traffic, including the boat launch.

Baker and the city continue to work with Thompson about the quality of the asphalt and road work on Sauk Drive from Sprague to Michigan Avenue.

The road is uneven, and engineers question the quality of the construction. The contract allows the city to withhold 10% of the payments until engineers are satisfied with construction.

Baker also said work on the downtown public bathrooms between Monroe Street and Tibbits parking lot continues.

“The roof is nearly completed. Doors are still on back order and scheduled for delivery August 16. Plumbing fixtures and final painting and installation is scheduled to be completed by the end of the month," he said.

The long-planned facility should be open by Apple Fest Saturday, Sept. 16.
