Westlake football team heads list of Austin-area all-state selections

After claiming a third consecutive Class 6A state championship, Westlake swept the state’s Class 6A postseason honors based on votes from members of the Texas Sports Writers Association.

Senior quarterback Cade Klubnik earned the Class 6A’s offensive player of the year after throwing for 3,251 yards, 43 touchdowns and only three interceptions, and senior defensive end Ethan Burke shared defensive player of the year honors after racking up 58 tackles, 12 sacks and 14 tackles. Coach Todd Dodge, who retired after the season, received the coach of the year award after leading Westlake to a 16-0 record while extending the Chaps’ winning streak to 40 games, which is the third-longest active streak by a public high school in the nation.

Liberty Hill senior Andon Thomas also earned statewide honors, picking up Class 5A’s defensive player of the year award after notching 237 total tackles while leading the Panthers to the Class 5A Division II championship game, where they fell to South Oak Cliff 23-14 in a hard-fought defensive struggle.
