Westlake, Lake Travis, Vandegrift finish near top of Lone Star Cup standings
Westlake and Lake Travis have battled for the unofficial title of the best Class 6A athletic program in the Austin area for the past decade.
But as the final standings of the 2022 Lone Star Cup show, the two lake schools now have company.
Westlake and Lake Travis finished tied for fourth with 86 points. Vandegrift placed sixth, just 2.3 points behind the Chaps and Cavs. It’s the best finish for the two-time Class 5A Lone Star Cup champions since they moved up to the state’s largest classification in 2016.
Vandegrift won District 25-6A titles in volleyball, football, boys soccer and girls soccer, and leaned on distance runners to thrive during cross-country and track season. That success, said head football coach and campus athletic coordinator Drew Sanders, testifies to the depth and diversity of a Viper program that proved competitive in virtually every sport.
“There’s nothing that makes me prouder than seeing a Vandegrift team be successful,” he said.

Since its inception in 1997, the Lone Star Cup has provided the state’s only comprehensive measurement of a high school’s cumulative success in athletics, academics and other extracurricular activities. The competition awards points based on district titles and playoff success in all UIL-sanctioned sports, academic and extracurricular competitions.
Westlake continued a school tradition by finishing in the top 10 of the Lone Star Cup standings for the 21st time in the past 24 years of the competition. The Chaps, the 2015-16 winner of the Class 6A cup, won a third consecutive state championship in football and a fifth straight boys golf title and reached the state tournament in boys basketball and girls soccer. In addition, Westlake continued its strong tradition in academics and other extracurricular activities.
Lake Travis had its best showing as a Class 6A school after its boys soccer team won a state championship and all of its traditional team sports reached the playoffs.
Southlake Carroll won a third consecutive Lone Star Cup in Class 6A with a record 131 points.
