Out & About: The Westmoreland's Vintage Ball is good, old-fashioned fun

Jan. 29—Sometimes you just want to have a little, old-fashioned fun.

The Westmoreland Museum of American Art provided just the ticket, packing decades of enjoyment into one night at its Jan. 21 Vintage Ball.

Everything old felt new again, as guests flocked to the sold-out soiree looking like they'd stepped out of every era from the Roaring '20s to the Swinging '60s.

Rebecca Sexton of Greensburg borrowed from friends and neighbors, arriving in slinky '60s style — from her beehive hairdo, to her slimline gown with bejeweled neckline (and pockets), to her fur wrap. Only her "red-sole shoes" came from the 2o2os, she said.

There were flocks of flappers and gaggles of war-era gals — not to mention the gents in their fedoras and newsboy caps, watch chains and spats.

The preferred accessory for the night was the elongated, black cigarette holder — though, of course, no one actually lit up.

Party-goers bellied up to the speakeasy bar for a splash of bathtub gin or moonshine, then fortified themselves with vintage recipe-inspired heavy appetizers.

The Gatsby Gang Jazz Band played tunes for those eager to cut a rug on the checkerboard dance floor.

Adding to the atmosphere, actors from Stage Right mingled with the crowd, portraying gangsters, cigarette girls, moonshiners and other era-appropriate characters.
