Westport Writes Together celebrates gardens for final season of community project

WESTPORT — Spring is here and everything is poised to bloom, just as the final writing season of Westport Writes Together is unfurling.

The community writing project, led by Midori Evans, has been centered around the beauty to be found in Westport. It’s been a way for participating writers to celebrate the town as they create, focusing on Westport’s natural beauty during different seasons.

Writers create work centered on seasonally-inspired prompts, and the project has also encouraged a community of writers to form.

The spring writing prompt celebrates garden life: "Write of a garden you love or of the feeling of caring for young plants as you ready your garden for spring.”

"We’ve been loving some of the short garden poems we’ve gotten," Evans wrote in a press release. “'Dancing in sweet fresh air' welcomed us into the spring writing season while another writer’s plants celebrated her, whispering to her 'your soul is green!'"

The project has also featured writers' gatherings, as well as library readings.

A final writers' gathering was held on April 3 and there is one more library reading. It will be held at the Westport Free Public Library, 408 Old County Rd., on Saturday, April 29 at 1 p.m.

Anyone is welcome to join.

Westport Writes Together's fall library reading was held on Nov. 12, at the Westport Free Public Library, 408 Old County Road, and was a chance for writers to meet and share ideas, and where those who wanted to read their work out loud.

Krista Allen, one of the board members, said in a press release, “Participating in Westport Writes gave me an opportunity to meet new people in the community. I was encouraged to venture outside my reclusive corner during the colder months, converse with other local writers, and break out of my comfort zone by sharing my creative ramblings. I look forward to future projects like this and I am grateful to have found a kindred group of dedicated lexiphiles.”

The project also led to the formation of the Westport Writers Group. They meet monthly to write together and welcome writers in the area.
