Drier, warmer weather expected in Chicago this weekend, National Weather Service says

The wet, wintry conditions Chicagoans saw Friday morning are gone for now as warmer temperatures and drier weather approach, according to the National Weather Service.

High temperatures for the weekend will sit in the lower 40s and lows in the lower to mid-30s, with Sunday looking slightly warmer than Saturday. The temperatures are a bit above normal for this time of year, NWS meteorologist Gino Izzi said.

“There should be some light drizzle or showers... but that should be the exception more than the rule,” he said.

Sleet and ice mixed with rain and fell upon Chicago Friday but didn’t stick, Izzi said. Northern suburbs in Lake and McHenry Counties saw slushy accumulations of 1-2 inches, he added.

“There’s still some snow on grassy surfaces in the areas that got a little more, but it didn’t stick around long,” he said.

The precipitation won’t freeze over before drying, with temperatures expected to stay above freezing throughout the weekend. Highs are expected to move into the upper 40s midway through next week, and rain is likely to return on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The sun, however, is not expected to pierce through much over the next few days, with clouds once again set to gray out Chicagoland skies.

“No good sun-tanning weather coming for the next several days, at least until the middle of next week,” Izzi said.
