Wetter, cooler days again in store for Modesto this week. Flood advisory indefinite

After four dry days — at least according to Modesto Irrigation District precipitation measurements — rain returned to Modesto on Sunday and remains in the forecast for much of the week.

A flood advisory for the Modesto area is in effect “until further notice,” the National Weather Service reports in its seven-day forecast online Sunday.

The Tuolumne River in Modesto and the San Joaquin River in Newman both remain in flood monitor stage and and are expected to stay there for the next several days, the Stanislaus County Office of Emergency Services said in a Facebook post Sunday.

StanEmergency also noted that all current evacuation warnings and orders issued remain in effect. One evacuation shelter is at the Salvation Army Red Shield Community Center, 1649 Las Vegas St., Modesto, and a second is at Stanislaus County Fairgrounds, 900 N. Broadway, Turlock.

In southern San Joaquin County, the San Joaquin River in Vernalis still was flowing almost a foot above its flood stage of 29 feet. A National Weather Service chart shows its level receding through Wednesday, though.

As of 1 p.m. Sunday, 0.15 inches of rain had been measured at MID’s downtown office, already exceeded the amount predicted by the Weather Service for the day. Sunday night had a 30% chance of showers, the Weather Service said.

Monday is expected to be mostly sunny, there’s a 40% chance of showers that night, after 11. From Sunday through Monday, Modesto was forecast to receive up to a quarter inch of precipitation.

A second weather system Tuesday and Wednesday could bring up to an inch more, according to a NWS news release Sunday.

Thursday looks to be another mostly sunny day, with a chance of showers returning that night and continuing through Friday night.

Then the forecast for Saturday is sunny.

After a week that saw mostly warmer days, even poking into the 70s last Monday and again Saturday, lower temperatures also return. Monday’s high is expected to be near 61, but Tuesday’s is 53 and Wednesday’s 55.

Thursday’s high is expected to be near 60, and Friday and Saturday should be near 58.
