Weymouth schools list $17 million in capital needs, including $5 million next year

WEYMOUTH − From crosswalk lights outside several schools to buying two maintenance vans to upgrading the heating system at the Ralph Talbot School, the school department is requesting more than $5 million in capital projects next fiscal year.

The school department’s high-priority capital-needs list for fiscal 2024 totals about $5.2 million. The new fiscal year begins July 1.

The request for next year includes 19 items, ranging from technology upgrades to vehicles for student transportation and the maintenance department. Big-ticket items include $1.2 million for the second phase of a heating system project at Ralph Talbot Elementary School, $1 million for heating and cooling system upgrades at the high school and $1 million for a transportation garage.

The district's full capital-needs list totals more than $17 million in projects and purchases administrators hope to tackle in the next few years.

Improvements valued at more than $25,000 with a life span of five or more years are included on the district's capital list. All administrators and school departments have the chance to submit requests for the list. The school committee approved the list at its meeting last week.

The school department's full fiscal 2024 budget proposal will be submitted to Mayor Robert Hedlund on March 24.
