WFP says supply chains 'falling apart' in Ukraine

STORY: "The country's food supply chain is falling apart. Movements of goods have slowed down due to insecurity and the reluctance of drivers," Jakob Kern, WFP Emergency Coordinator for the Ukraine crisis, told a Geneva press briefing by videolink from Poland.

He also expressed concern about the situation in "encircled cities" such as Mariupol, saying that food and water supplies were running out and that its convoys had been unable to enter the city.

Speaking via videolink from Poland, UNHCR spokesman Matthew Saltmarsh said that the number of people crossing borders to flee the war in Ukraine has slowed in recent days but could rise again if the fighting spreads further west.

Daily crossings into Poland, the country that has received most arrivals, have fallen by around half from a peak of about 100,000 daily, he said.

Overall, U.N. agencies say 3.27 million people have fled Ukraine since the start of the Russian invasion on February 24 and an additional 2 million people have been displaced internally.
