WH confirms support for Japan on Olympics

A major newspaper, Japan's Asahi Shimbun, on Wednesday (May 26) called for the Tokyo Olympics to be canceled with the Games set to open in less than two months.

"We respected the decision to delay the games last summer and we understand the careful consideration the Japanese Olympic Committee are weighing as they prepare for the Tokyo Olympics just coming up right around the corner", said Jean-Pierre.

"So, the government of Japan has stressed that public health remains a central priority as they plan to host the games. Tokyo has assured us that they will keep within close contact with Washington as their plans develop and the president proudly supports the US athletes who have trained for these games and will be competing in the best traditions of the Olympic spirit."
