White House spokesman Hogan Gidley moves to Trump campaign

Long-serving White House communications official Hogan Gidley is moving over to Donald Trump’s campaign.

Gidley, who has spent nearly three years as a top White House spokesman, will serve as the campaign’s national press secretary. The reelection effort has made several major staff moves in recent weeks as it prepares for the general election, elevating longtime Trump political adviser Bill Stepien and rehiring 2016 campaign aide Jason Miller.

The spokesman will fill the role of Kayleigh McEnany, who left the campaign in April to become White House press secretary. In filling the position, Trump aides said they were looking for someone who could help coordinate between the White House and campaign. Tim Murtaugh, the campaign’s communications director, will maintain control of the campaign press office.

Gidley, who has been in talks with the campaign for around a month, became a TV regular during his tenure. He had been particularly close with former White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders after working on her father’s presidential campaigns.

Prior to joining the White House, Gidley spent decades in campaign politics. He worked for an array of figures, including Elizabeth Dole and Rick Santorum. He also served for a time as executive director of the South Carolina Republican Party.

Trump son-in-law Jared Kushner, who has broad influence over the reelection effort, said in a statement that Gidley’s “two decades of prior campaign experience combined with his deep knowledge of the Administration make him an invaluable addition.”
