Whale dies after washing ashore on beach at Hanna Park, FWC says

A whale died after washing ashore on the beach at Hanna Park on Wednesday morning, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission confirmed.

FWC got a call from Hanna Park staff that the live dwarf sperm whale had washed ashore.

The whale, which was 7 feet in length, appeared to be injured.

The animal was alive at the time, so FWC staff rushed to the beach, loaded the whale into their truck and sedated it.

The plan was to take the whale to the Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens, but the whale died.

A necropsy is being done to determine the cause of death.
