What to watch on TV this week: The 7 best shows, from Litvinenko to the Strictly final

Of course, this week's TV is dominated by the World Cup which reaches its final on Sunday, airing on BBC and ITV from 2pm.

But even if you're not a football fan (or are still heartbroken that England have gone home) there are plenty of other TV highlights to distract you.

It's grittier viewing than much of the Christmassy offerings on TV this week, but Channel 4's gripping three-part documentary is worth a watch.

Following the investigation into the disappearance of 5-year-old April Jones in Wales, it looks at how the suspect list turned to people she knew in what eventually became a murder case.

Viewers will see how the police successfully built a case against the man who abducted her and discovered what had happened to the little girl.

The detective period drama returns for series three with further grisly cases to explore.

In the first episode, psychoanalyst Max Liebermann and detective Oskar Rheinhard team up once more to investigate the murder of a seamstress at a luxury fashion house, and uncover a sinister core to the seemingly glamorous industry.

Freshly launched streaming service ITVX continues into week two with another big-name drama launch.

David Tennant plays Alexander Litvinenko, the former Russian security officer turned British intelligence informant who was poisoned at his English home and reported his own murder three weeks before he actually died.

The drama features the investigation into his poisoning, and his wife's battle to get the government to bring his killers to justice.

Stacey Solomon's Crafty Christmas - Thursday - BBC One, 8pm

Kirstie Allsopp is usually the queen of Christmas crafts, but she could be about to be toppled from her throne by DIY guru Stacey Solomon.

The TV star frequently amazes with her transformation of her home Pickle Cottage and now she's set to show fans how they can recreate some of her handiwork in their own homes with Christmas crafts, decorations and handmade presents.

At long last, we're back up to full throttle for a Strictly final as four couples battle it out for the glitterball trophy.

It's too close to call this year, making for an exciting final instalment which will announce the winner live at the end of the episode.

Watch out for the semi final results this week too, which were moved to Monday night to make way for World Cup football over the weekend.

There's a pre-Christmas treat in store for His Dark Materials fans, as season three of the Philip Pullman adaptation launches.

Ruth Wilson, James McAvoy and Dafne Keen are all back for more adventures with Lyra as she tries to escape the clutches of Mrs Coulter and Lord Asriel presses on with his war against the Authority.
