'The Responder', 'The Gilded Age', 'Trigger Point': What to watch on TV this week 24-30 January

This week's TV highlights include some unmissable drama series, as Monday sees new Martin Freeman series The Responder launch on BBC One, Julian Fellowes' The Gilded Age begins on Sky Atlantic on Tuesday, and BritBox debuts Hotel Portofino on Thursday.

Jamie Dornan thriller The Tourist concludes on BBC One on Sunday, going head to head with the second episode of ITV crime drama Trigger Point starring Vicky McClure.

Entertainment show fans have plenty to look forward to this week, too, with the latest episode of The Apprentice on BBC One on Thursday and ITV airing The Masked Singer and Dancing On Ice over the weekend.

Monday

Martin Freeman stars in this new crime thriller as a police officer struggling with his mental health, who thinks he may be able to do some good by helping out a heroin addict in danger.

However, he doesn't realise that his colleagues, convinced he is corrupt, are watching him in this tense tale of how life in the police has irreversibly damaged him.

Only Connect - BBC Two - 8pm

Victoria Coren Mitchell's ridiculously tough quiz reaches its series final, with some particularly uncrackable clues.

Will the Golfers or the Data Wizards emerge triumphant?

Billions - Sky Atlantic - 9pm

Damian Lewis has now left the drama about power politics in the world of New York finance, but the complex story rumbles on.

This new series sees Mike Prince (Corey Stoll) take his place at the head of Axe Capital, but Paul Giamatti's Chuck Rhoades is pondering how much wealth and power one person should have access to.

Tuesday

Julian Fellowes' long-awaited US period drama finally makes its debut with Downton Abbey fans hoping it will replace their much-missed favourite.

It follows Marian, who moves to New York City from rural Pennsylvania after her father's death to live with her wealthy aunt, against the glamorous backdrop of the American Gilded Age.

Secrets of the Krays - ITV - 9pm

Britain's most notorious gangsters always make for a fascinating subject, and this three-part documentary follows their rise and fall in London.

Twins Ronnie and Reggie might have started out running the streets of East London, but their influence extended out across the city thanks to links with famous names.

Wednesday

The Sinner - Netflix

Bill Pullman's morose detective Harry Ambrose returns for a fourth series, reeling from the grim events of season three.

This time, it begins with Harry believing he has seen the daughter of a wealthy family walk off the edge of a cliff, but with no body found and reports of her being spotted driving away, the veteran detective finds himself on a tricky missing person case.

Jay Blades: Learning to Read at 51 - BBC One - 9pm

The breakout star of The Repair Shop takes on a brave documentary as he opens up on having the reading age of an 11-year-old.

Jay Blades shares how his problems with reading have affected his life as he begins a six-month course with a system used in prisons to improve his literacy.

Katie Price's Mucky Mansion - Channel 4 - 9pm

The former glamour model's sprawling home was nicknamed Mucky Mansion thanks to it falling into disrepair over her years living there, but now she plans to restore it to its former glory.

Katie Price and her family aim to put bad memories behind them as they renovate and redecorate to create their dream home.

Thursday

The Apprentice - BBC One - 9pm

Last week saw Lord Sugar lose two candidates - not through a double firing, but because Shama Amin had to withdraw for health reasons.

The contest rolls on for the remaining candidates, who'll be trying to prove their worth and trip each other up in their bid to become Lord Sugar's next business partner.

Hotel Portofino - BritBox

The streaming service introduces this period drama starring Natascha McElhone and Anna Chancellor in the beautiful Italian resort of Portofino.

McElhone's Bella Ainsworth moves to Italy to set up a British hotel in the Roaring 20s, but with local political tensions and the ravages of the recent First World War on her own family to contend with, it isn't just the picky guests causing her problems.

Friday

Winterwatch - BBC Two - 8pm

It's the last in the series of this year's Winterwatch and we'll see an update on the various types of wildlife that Chris Packham and co have been following over the past two weeks.

There's also a chance to see more of the wildlife viewers have been spotting from the winter watchlist and viewers are sure to be left feeling inspired to get out and enjoy the cold.

Saturday

The Masked Singer - ITV.- 7pm

It's getting to the exciting end of the competition as the mystery celebrities are further slimmed down.

Last year's bottom two of unmasked Poodle and saved Robobunny showed the audience votes don't necessarily reflect the best singers as much as the most fun performers to watch - could we actually see Doughnuts win?

Sunday

Vicky McClure's bomb disposal expo Lana deals with the aftermath of last week's shocking explosion, but what has become of Nut?

It seems clear that the bomb wasn't a one-off incident as we prepare to see Lana and co investigate who planted it, and why.

Dancing On Ice - ITV - 6pm

The full celebrity cast perform on one bill for the first time after last week's Ben Foden exit.

Ice routines this week will be themed on films as the couples aim to create box office hits rather than film flops - and hopefully there'll be no disaster scenes.

The Tourist - BBC One - 9pm

It has of course been available as a full series on iPlayer, but Jamie Dornan's thriller about a man with amnesia tracking his identity in the Australian Outback concludes on BBC One tonight.

Dornan's character The Man will finally discover all about his backstory, but it won't necessarily be the tale of redemption he's looking for, while Helen makes some big life decisions.
