Whataburger coming to Prattville

PRATTVILLE — Whataburger is coming to Prattville.

The Texas-based burger chain has more than 900 restaurants in 14 states, according to the company's website.

Prattville's Whataburger will go into the closed Fazoli's location, Mayor Bill Gillespie Jr. announced during the Tuesday night City Council meeting. That's on Business Park Drive, a service road off Fairview Avenue near the Interstate 65 interchange.

Building plans are on file with the city's planning department, but no opening date has been set. Company officials did not return an email seeking comment for this story.

The chain is known for its Texas-sized burgers and sandwiches and orange-and-white restaurants. Most locations are open 24 hours a day and close only on Christmas.

News of the popular eateries settling in Prattville was just beginning to filter out Wednesday morning. Word circulated in the city pre-pandemic that the restaurant was looking for a location in east Prattville, but those rumors didn't pan out.

"This is great! said Bryant Harper, of Prattville. "I don't have to go all the way out to Eastchase to get my fix now."

Whataburger has locations in Clanton and east Montgomery. Alabama's 29th Whataburger, in Gadsden, was announced last month.

Wilma Carter applauds the news for another reason.

"Another burger joint? Really?" she said. "But at least they are going into an empty building. We have too many empty buildings in Prattville."
