Whataburger is officially open in Southaven, the burger chain’s first Memphis-area location.

The brand opened its doors at 176 Goodman Rd. E. on Monday at 11 a.m. to a crowd of customers.

Customer Robin Sanders said she’d been preparing for the grand opening; at midnight, she was the first customer in line.

“I’ve always loved Whataburger,” she said. “Me and my daddy used to go after church on Sundays.”

Another customer, Jeannie Deason, was in line at the drive-thru when FOX13′s crew showed up.

She recalled an older Whataburger location in the Whitehaven area.

“We lived in that area,” she said. “They had the retro one with the big ‘W’ and we just thought that was so cool as kids. They tore it down...so we just saw a dead building forever, so I’m glad it’s come back.”

As the first customers, Deason and Sanders received a year’s supply of burgers, fries, shakes and more.

Deason said she hopes she won’t come ‘every single day.’

Management at the location said they expect to be busy, but they have over 100 staff members and expect to make a smooth start.

A second location at 6829 Goodman Rd. N., also in Southaven, is opening in the coming weeks.

Whataburger is known for its made-to-order burgers and has been in business for over seven decades.

According to the company’s website, the burger chain has over 890 locations across the country.

Whataburger is open 24 hours a day.

Traffic is expected to be heavier than usual during the restaurant’s opening.
