'Whatever you need': Medway High's Brett Curran switches position to help football team
MEDWAY — Brett Curran wore a new football jersey on Thursday night.
The Medway High senior also had a new position.
A week after being asked to move from his normal slot wide receiver spot to offensive tackle, the 6-foot-2, 215-pound captain donned a blue No. 52 jersey – as opposed to his normal No. 8 – and lined up at right tackle in a game against Westwood.
Despite a 48-21 loss to the Wolverines, Medway head coach Anthony Mazzola was proud of the example his selfless senior captain set.
“You can preach team-first all you want,” Mazzola said after his team dropped to 0-4. “But only when one of your leaders embraces it, it can resonate with the entire team.”
Following a 48-0 loss to Holliston in Week 2, Mazzola took Curran aside and asked if he’d switch to the offensive line since the Mustangs needed more physicality up front. Given some time to think about the change, Curran agreed to make the switch a week later – following a 28-6 defeat to Winthrop.
“I wanted to win football games,” Curran, 17, said. “So I was like ‘Of course Coach, whatever you need.’”

“Testament of a team captain,” Mazzola said.
Curran, who also added six tackles (2 for a loss) at defensive end, helped open up space for senior quarterback Luke Frauton and the Medway offense to operate. The result? The Mustangs’ scored more points on Thursday than they had in their previous three games.

Frauton, also a captain, rushed for 87 yards and one score (and added 120 yards passing and a tossing TD) while junior running back Henry Comras added 59 yards on the ground and a rushing score in the loss.
“That’s just what a captain is,” Frauton said of Curran. “He’s doing whatever he can to help the team. Obviously, it showed tonight and he helped a lot with the run game and he’s doing whatever he can to help.”
“Even if I have to play a different position – I’m willing to do that to win,” Curran said.
Key plays
A 61-yard TD run from Frauton cut the Mustangs’ deficit to 20-7 with 9:28 left in the first half.

But less than a minute later, Westwood senior QB Brendan Donegan tossed a 70-yard touchdown pass to make it a 20-point lead again.
By the numbers
4: The number of touchdowns Donegan tossed for Westwood in the win over Medway.
19: The amount of points Medway had scored in its first three weeks before registering 21 on Thursday.
62: Frauton connected with classmate Will Haddigan for a 62-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter.
They said it
“We’re starting to build more connection, especially with our receivers and our line,” Frauton said. “We started a little bit of a new offense this week and implementing it and we’re more trusting of each other now than in past weeks.”

“He’s just doing anything he can to help the team,” said Marc Curran, Brett’s father and a former University of Maine football player. “That’s the unselfish kind of kid he is.”

Medway next hosts Norton on Oct. 7 (6:15 p.m.) while Westwood (3-1) heads to Medfield on the same day for a 7 p.m. start.
