CHEBOYGAN COUNTY — As the midterm election approaches, voters statewide will make their voices heard in the race for governor and issues such as Prop 3.

Closer to home, Cheboygan County voters will have the opportunity to decide on county commissioners, as well as millage proposals.

City of Cheboygan

In the city, council incumbents Mary Darling, Brett Mallory, Adam Bedwin and Diane Mills are running for reelection. Out of the four candidates, three will retain their seats on the council. Bedwin is running for a partial term that will end in November 2024. The other three candidates are running for full, four-year terms.

Local schools

School board race

The Cheboygan Area Schools board currently has two positions open and seven candidates are vying for the seats. Five of those candidates — Carmela Boyd, Marlin Lowery, Matthew Minarchek, Marianne Ridings and Timothy Tarjeft — are running for full, six-year terms. Dennis Olsen is running for a partial term ending Dec. 31, 2026 and Amber Hansen is running for a partial term ending Dec. 31, 2024.

Operating millage

This proposal would renew the millage that provides the district’s operating budget. The tax would be renewed at the same rate of up to 18 mills, which restores mills lost due to the Headlee Amendment.

Onaway Area Schools board race

The Onaway school board has two open seats and several candidates running to fill them. Candidates Erin Chaskey, Michael Hart, Sharon Lyon and Kanisha Perkins are running for a full, six-year term. Candidates Michael Benson, Jessica Chandler, John Palmer and Lisa Pochmara are running for a partial term ending in December 2026. Candidates John Burtch, Lorrie Kowalski, James Rieger and Joshua VanHuysen are running for a partial term ending in December 2024.

Wolverine Community School

The Wolverine school board has three seats open and five candidates — Eric Brado, Tabitha Glazier, Troy Nelson, Garrett Sherman and Tal Babcock.

Vanderbilt operating millage

Vanderbilt Area Schools is seeking to renew its operating millage, which has previously been approved at 18 mills. Part of the proposal is for Vanderbilt schools to increase its millage by one for the year 2023 and continue at 19 mills from 2024 to 2028. If approved, the additional one mill will raise about $53,000 in 2023 and 18 mills levied in 2024 will raise about $972,000.

County

Cheboygan County has seven districts, two of which have contested races. In the first district, which covers a portion of the City of Cheboygan — south from Court Street and west of Western Avenue — along with Munro, Burt, Hebron, Mackinaw and Beaugrand townships, Max Boettger is running as a Democrat against Jeff L. Ostman, who is running as a Republican.

In Cheboygan’s second district, which consists of part of the City of Cheboygan — north of Meridian Road to south of Bennett Road — and Inverness Township, Democrat David Wayne Martin is running against Republican incumbent Richard B. Sangster.

Two candidates are running to represent Cheboygan’s third district — Republican Michael Newman and Libertarian Andrew Evans.

Two seats are open on the Cheboygan County Road Commission and two candidates are running for six-year terms — Republican Greg Bunker and Republican incumbent Henry Ginop.

Townships

Inverness Township voters will decide on a new supervisor, who will serve a partial term ending in November 2024. Candidates for supervisor are Republican incumbent Rodney LaHaie and Chris Hudak, who is not affiliated with a party.

The Village of Wolverine will be voting on president, clerk and treasurer, all of which have candidates running unopposed. The village also has three trustee seats open with four candidates running for them — Tal Babcock, Carla DeVoll, Anne Ford and Dennis Holden.
