What's the Buzz: A fishing tournament, live music or an oddities expo for the week ahead

Pick any one of the events happening in and around the area to keep your week busy. I’ll be highlighting attractions, activities, and festivals right here, every week. From local music and shows to options for those of you who don’t mind traveling a bit, there’s something for everyone. Be sure to check all activities, as cancellations can occur. The events listed are for April 13 to 22.

Friday

The Tennessee Bluegrass Band. Head to Guernsey County’s only opera house to hear some of the best bluegrass around. The Pennyroyal Opera House in Fairview presents the Tennessee Bluegrass Band, with the opening band to still be announced. The kitchen and doors open at 5 p.m. The bluegrass show will begin at 7 p.m. Tickets are $15 at the door. For more information visit www.pennyroyalbluegrass.com. Saturday

Youth Fishing Tournament. Sugartree Marina is home once again to the Youth Fishing Tournament. Prizes will be awarded for first place in each age group. Participants are asked to bring their own fishing poles. A limited number of loaner fishing poles will be available. Fishing licenses are not required for those ages 15 and younger. The event runs from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. For more information call 740-439-4009. Sugartree Marina, Road 67 in Salt Fork State Park, 14755 Cadiz Road, Lore City.

April 21

Matt Frampton. Sometimes all you need to clear your head is some time out with some killer tunes. If that’s what you’re looking for, head out to see Matt Frampton perform. He has an extremely diverse catalog of music, ranging from covers to originals. The Zanesville native has performed at many local establishments and also spent time performing in New York City. April 22

Columbus Oddities & Curiosities Expo. Take a break from the norm and head to Columbus for a creepy good time. According to the Facebook event post, "You'll find items such as taxidermy, preserved specimens, original artwork, horror/Halloween inspired pieces, antiques, handcrafted oddities, quack medical devices, creepy clothing, odd jewelry, skulls/bones, funeral collectibles and much more." Guests can take a taxidermy class or venture if they dare into the Cryptic Collection of a Mad Clown exhibit for an additional charge, though it is not recommended for youngsters or those with a weak stomach. The event is scheduled to run from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday. Tickets are $10 in advance or $15 at the door. Kids aged 12 and under are free. As highlighted in last week's column:

  • Friday. Antrim Mennonite School fundraiser dinner. The homecooked meal includes ham, grilled chicken tenders, mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans, tossed salad, applesauce, homemade bread and homemade pie and ice cream. Carry-out is available. Cost is by donation. The dinner is scheduled to run from 5 to 8 p.m. Antrim Mennonite School, 20360 Cadiz Road, Freeport.

  • Saturday. Columbus Blooms. The Franklin Park Conservatory is packed with all of your favorite spring blooms. Hyacinths, croci, and 125,000 tulips fill the gardens. The exhibit is included with admission, which ranges from $15.50 to $23. Be sure to visit the Blooms and Butterflies exhibit as well and learn about the fluttering beauties.
