The Milwaukee Public Market plans to debut The Dinky Rink, a 770-square-foot public ice rink, outside its building on Jan. 21.

The Milwaukee Public Market is planning to open a free outdoor ice skating rink this week — and it's going to be "dinky." Their words, not ours.

The Dinky Rink, a 770-square-foot ice rink, will be "the area’s smallest public ice skating rink," according to a Wednesday news release.

The rink area will feature covered seating, outdoor heaters and access to food and drink options from market vendors, the news release said. It will be on the north side of the market building and inside the Parking Lot Patio tented seating area.

The rink was developed in response to an increased interest in outdoor activity during the winter months, the news release said.

Reservations and your own skates are required to participate, but there's no fee to skate, according to the news release. The free time slots are for 90 minutes. And no more than eight people will be allowed on the ice at one time.

Participants have to be at least 3 years old, and anyone under 18 has to be accompanied by an adult.

The rink will open Friday, weather permitting. The Milwaukee Admirals' mascot, Roscoe, will do a ceremonial "first skate" at 10 a.m. Friday, then will take pics with fans inside the market.

The rink will be open during general market operating hours, which are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday, according to its website.
