What's your favorite kind of pie? Sweet or savory, these Newport County spots got it covered

NEWPORT — Host of "The Great British Bake Off," Paul Hollywood, once said that everyone has a favorite cake, pastry, pudding or pie from when they were kids, and indeed, there are many types of pies and occasions to eat them.

During the holidays, pumpkin pie, apple pie and mincemeat pies are some of the favorites, and in the summer, pie lovers might enjoy a slice of key lime pie, lemon meringue pie, or chocolate mousse pie.

For those who might not like sweets, there options for savory pies including chicken pot pie, shepherd's pie, and of course, pizza pie.

Historians attribute the first pies to ancient Egyptians, who filled rustic crusts in 6000 B.C., with oats, wheat, rye and barley, topped the treat with honey and baked it over hot coals.

In Newport County, there are many options available for locals and visitors to sink their teeth into a slice.

Mad Hatter Bakery

The Mad Hatter Bakery, located at 64 Broadway, across from City Hall in Newport, bakes pies to order. Customers must give a two day notice for their pie needs, and can purchase apple, apple crumb, blueberry, chocolate cream, key lime, pecan, pumpkin, mince and coconut custard pies.

Provencal Bakery & Café

Special orders for pies can also be made at Provencal Bakery & Café, where options include a fruit tart, blueberry, apple, pumpkin, pecan several cream pies including chocolate, banana or coconut, and ricotta pie.

Sweet Berry Farm

Pies from Sweet Berry Farm include an assortment of fruit pies such as strawberry rhubarb and mixed berry, key lime pie, coconut custard pie, chocolate cream pie and cheesecake pie. Sweet Berry Farm is located at 915 Mitchell's Lane in Middletown.

Anna D's

Anna D's has fruit pies including blueberry and peach pies, chocolate tarts, fruit tarts and savory tarts. They also serve quiche, frittatas and chicken pot pie. The eatery is located at 954 East Main Road in Portsmouth.

Buskers

If you're in the mood for a savory pie, Buskers serves a traditional Irish cottage pie filled with ground beef, carrots, onions, peas and mushrooms. The pie is simmered in gravy and topped with mashed potatoes. Buskers is located in downtown Newport at 178 Thames Street.
