2022 Coffee House Series

The Community Arts Center of Cambria County 7th season of the Coffee House Series hosts five indoor/outdoor musical events in this year’s series, on the Center’s Amphitheatre. During inclement weather, the Coffee House will move from the Amphitheatre to indoors in the main space gallery of the Goldhaber-Fend Fine Arts Center building. The Coffee House Series will be providing coffees, teas, and baked goods for purchase during the event. All Coffee Houses start at 7 p.m. and run roughly until 8:30 p.m. May 13, The Sharptones; June 3, Midnight Graffiti.

Trinity Players back on stage

After a two-year hiatus, Laurel Trinity’s Trinity Players will be once again be entertaining audiences with their hysterical theatrics. The play is called “Drinking Habits,” and is dedicated in memory of Betsy Kaufman, Tim McQuaide, Nancy Kaufman and Keith Barnick, all of whom passed away in the past two years. Accusations, mistaken identities, and romances run wild in this traditional, laugh-out-loud farce. Two nuns at the Sisters of Perpetual Sewing have been secretly making wine to keep the convent’s doors open, but Paul and Sally, reporters, and former fiancées, are hot on their trail. Cast members include Jodie Blough as Sister Mary Catherine, Carol Barnick as Mother Superior, Bill Blough as George, Cindy Bumbarger as Sister Philamena, Nancy Wojnarowski as Sister Augusta, Bruce Horner as Paul, Wilma Horner as Sally, Deron Koontz as Father Chenille, Directing and casting by Biff Baron and Stage Manager Peggy Yommer.

Performances are 7 p.m. May 13 , 5 p.m. May 14, spaghetti dinner and performance at 7 p.m., and noon May 15, with spaghetti luncheon and performance at 2 p.m. A free will donation will be accepted to help defray the cost for the ELCA National Youth Gatherings for the youth. All performances will be held at the Mountain Playhouse, south of Jennerstown along Route 985. Both spaghetti dinner and luncheon will be held in the social hall of Laurel Trinity Lutheran Church in Jennerstown. Addison VFD Chicken Barbecue

Dine in or take out spaghetti dinner

The Knights of Columbus of St. John's Parish in New Baltimore is sponsoring a dine in or take out spaghetti dinner from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 22. Featured speakers at Mountain Maryland Native Plant Festival

Several speakers will be featured at the seventh annual Mountain Maryland Native Plant Festival at New Germany State Park from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 14. These presentations which are geared for teens and adults will be held in the Recreation Hall. From 10:30 to 11:30 a.m., Rebekah Taylor, biology department chairwoman, Frostburg State University, will present “Lyme Disease & Tick Safety.” From noon to 1 p.m., Clara Thiel, Frostburg State University, will discuss “Rare Plants & Ecosystems of Mountain Maryland.” From 1:30 to 2:30 p.m., Ian Caton, Wood Thrush Native Plant Nursery, will present “The Meadow at Home: How to Design, Install and Care for NATIVE Perennial Wildflower Meadows.”

There will be native plants and nature-themed artisan items for sale, family-friendly activities, plus educational outreach by local conservation organizations. Club House and Cottage Row Walking Tours

Johnstown Flood National Memorial is offering Club House and Cottage Row Walking Tours May 21, as part of the 133rd anniversary of the 1889 Johnstown Flood. Club House Tour times are 10 a.m., 10:30 a.m., 11 a.m., and 11:30 a.m. Cottage Row Walking Tours are 1 p.m., 1:30 p.m., 2:30 p.m., and 3 p.m. Reservations are required for these free tours. Space is limited. All tours begin at the South Fork Fishing and Hunting Club House building in Saint Michael, and last approximately one hour.

Club House Tours include a walk through all three floors of the building that was the center of activity for members and guests at Lake Conemaugh. Participants will learn about the different uses of the building through the years, both during the years of the South Fork Fishing and Hunting Club and after.

For the Cottage Row Walking Tours, costumed park rangers will provide information on the 16 cottages built along the lake and the members of the South Fork Fishing and Hunting Club that owned them. As many of these structures are currently occupied, we will not be going into any buildings.

Somerset Class of 1972 50th year class reunion

The Somerset Area High School Class of 1972 will hold its 50th year class reunion July 2, at the Somerset Country Club. Happy Hour with a cash bar will be from 4:45–5:30 p.m. At 5:30 p.m., a class photograph will be taken, and at 6:30 p.m., a buffet dinner will be served. At approximately 9:30 p.m. the Somerset Community fireworks can be viewed, weather permitting, from the golf course at the Somerset Country Club.

Those attending may wish to bring a lawn chair. More than 200 classmate invitations were mailed Jan. 31. The deadline to RSVP is June 1. Free Electronics Recycling Event

A service project of the Friends of the Meyersdale Public Library, this free electronics recycling event by JVS Environmental is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 11, in the Meyersdale Area Elementary School parking lot. They will accept free of charge, computer equipment, video game consoles and TVs if intact. There is a $50 charge to take TV sets with broken glass. They will accept for a fee, florescent bulbs and car batteries, dehumidifiers, refrigerators and air conditioners. No vacuum cleaners or small appliances.

Johnstown Symphony Youth Orchestra Spring Concert

JSYO Director David Anderson will conduct the full orchestra at 7 p.m. May 15, at the Cochran Auditorium of Greater Johnstown High School. The concert will also feature a celebration of the students’ accomplishments, as there will be recognition of graduating seniors, as well as those who participated in Pennsylvania Music Educators Association honors ensembles this past spring. Proceeds from ticket sales go directly to the support of the youth orchestra.

Youth from across the region are welcomed to auditions for the 2022-23 season from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 4, in the Richland High School Band Room. All students who play orchestral instruments (violin, viola, cello, bass, flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, horn, trumpet, trombone, tuba, percussion, harp) are invited to audition for the JSYO’s 2022-23 season. Students will prepare music from their instrument’s solo repertoire as well as excerpts from orchestral pieces. Short sightreading examples will also be included.
