9th annual Lincoln Highway SupperMarket
The Lincoln Highway Experience’s annual Lincoln Highway SupperMarket is returning to the Route 30-based museum this summer for its ninth year. The popular weekly open-air food festival will take place on 13 Wednesdays until Aug. 24, 5-8 p.m., weather permitting, at the Lincoln Highway Experience’s grounds at 3435 Route 30 East in Latrobe. Guests can enjoy breezy summer evenings on the spacious lawn with great food from local chefs, BYOB, and live music. There is a charge per car for admission. Additional cost for food purchased from chefs’ booths. Tables are limited, so it is suggested that attendees also bring chairs or blankets, especially if you will be arriving late. No outside food or pets are permitted. The 2022 participating local chefs are Aroma Italiano, Chef Dato’s Table, Connections Café, Grateful Smoke BBQ and Simply Good. Concerts-on-the-Green Summer Concert Series
The 42nd annual free summer concert series, Concerts-on-the-Green, is underway at the Community Arts Center of Cambria County. The concerts are held on the grounds at 7 p.m. and run roughly to 8 p.m. every Wednesday, beginning June 23 through Aug. 18. Bring a lawn chair or blanket to listen to these concerts which take place on the new Amphitheatre in front of the M. Josephine Paul Family Museum. June 29: Civic Band; July 6: Civic Band; July 13: Civic Band.
First Fridays at the Somerset Historical Center
First Friday Food Trucks and Music at the Somerset Historical Center is an evening of music and local food outside on the lawn. The event is 5:30-8:30 p.m. July 1, and features music by JD and Cindy Ross and food for purchase by the Grumbling Gypsy and HGSSC. Tractor rides and campfires will be running throughout the evening. Parking is charged but admission is free. Seating is available, but bring your own chairs or blankets. First Fridays at the Somerset Historical Center are sponsored by the Historical and Genealogical Society of Somerset County and scheduled for each first Friday in July and August. The Windber Borough 125th Quasquicentennial is July 1-3, at Windber Recreation Park, 160 Rec Road, Windber. Golf outing to benefit Tunnel to Towers
The first golf outing to benefit Tunnel to Towers Foundation, swing for the vets and first responders, is 10 a.m. July 2, at Northwinds and Northwinds Peninsula (Arnold Palmer's first designed course). Movies Night
Movies night is back during the summer at Keystone State Park. The park will be playing a variety of movies at the beach house. The movies will be shown on a projector screen outside on the lawn. So grab your blankets, chairs and make sure you dress for the weather. The times for the movies are at 8:30 p.m., depending on when it gets dark. Movies will not be shown in inclement weather. Friedens Fourth of July Parade
The parade kicks off at 10:30 a.m. July 4 from the old I.X.L. Creamery and proceeds to the Friedens fire hall. Friedens Volunteer Fire Company will be selling hot dogs, hamburgers and drinks at the fire hall after the parade.
Independence Day Celebration
Historic Hanna's Town, 809 Forbes Trail Road, Greensburg, is featuring an Independence Day Celebration, 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. July 4, at this Revolutionary War settlement. Visitors can enjoy self-guided walks of historic areas and living history displays. Discover how western Pennsylvania participated in important events before, during and after the war that created the United States. Hanna’s Town is Westmoreland County's first seat of government. Learn about the Hanna's Town Resolves, considered by some to be a precursor to the Declaration of Independence. Explore a variety of living history displays presented by members of Proctor's Militia, I.B.W.C.P., and witness the Declaration of Independence read aloud as it was in 1776. St. Benedict Parish “Welcome Back” 87th reunion
St. Benedict Church in the Geistown section of Johnstown's return of the annual parish reunion on July 8, 9 and 10. After a two year hiatus, the church is celebrating the “Welcome Back” 87th reunion this year with a full slate of entertainment, food, games, children’s area, basket raffle, bingo, flea market, and many more activities for the entire family. Arcadia Theater presents Missoula Children's Theatre Coal-ala-Bear series for children, Rumpelstiltskin July 11-16. Relay For Life
The Meyersdale Salisbury Berlin Relay For Life is 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. July 9, at the Salisbury-Elk Lick High School baseball field. Poorbaugh/Burbach reunion
A reunion of related descendants of Philip Burbach/Poorbaugh, (Ca 1750-1812), will be held July 10, at the Mt. Olivet Church grove in Northampton Township, 9 miles south of Berlin, off LR2020. This is a continuation of the Poorbaugh/Purbaugh/ Burbach reunion which held its 66th reunion in 2019. The first reunion of the association was in 1952. Drone Camp
Laurel Highlands Education and Robotic's third annual Drone Camps provide two hours of drone activities geared for both beginners and experienced flyers. Allegheny Portage Railroad NHS
Costumed rangers conduct a variety of daily program offerings that vary from day to day at Allegheny Portage Railroad National Historic Site, 10 miles west of Altoona, off the Gallitzin exit of U.S. Highway 22. The programs are offered now through Sept. 30, and are generally held between 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. and from 2-4 p.m. The programs are weather and staff dependent. Johnstown Flood National Memorial
Join a Park Ranger for a guided walk through the ruins of the South Fork Dam, daily at 10:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m., now through Sept. 30. This interpretive walk will last approximately 45 minutes and will take participants to the bottom of the dam, through the breach and back out on the other side. The meeting location is on the South Abutment. Participants will learn about May 31, 1889, the hillside across from the dam, and much more. The last portion of the walk contains a steep section with stairs. The walk is approximately 1/3 mile. Participants are encouraged to wear proper shoes and bring water. Tales of the Great Flood ranger talks will take place in the Visitor Center Theater or outside at the Lake View House, following showings of the park film, “Black Friday.” These talks will be approximately 15-minutes in length. The program is offered Fridays through Mondays now through Sept. 26, at 9:55 a.m., 10:55 a.m., 11:55 a.m., 1:55 p.m., 2:55 p.m., and 3:55 p.m. Inquire at the desk on the day of your visit for program offerings and location. The talks are staff dependent. No reservations are required for this free program.
“JSA Open” 3-P Rifle Competition
The Jerome Junior Rifle Team (JJRT) will host its first ever “Outdoor 3-Position (3-P) 50 yard .22 caliber small-bore rifle competition.” The competition, which will include an indoor air-rifle match with .177 caliber rifles, will be conducted at the Jerome Sportsmen’s Association (JSA) facilities, 3220 Jerome Hill Road, Hollsopple. It starts from noon through 4 p.m. July 29, and starting at 8 a.m. and concluding at 4 p.m. both days, July, 30-31.
Pre-registeration is encouraged. There will be a chicken and burger barbecue and other food, snacks and drinks available for sale, proceeds to benefit the JJRT. The competition is sanctioned by NRA Shooting Sports. Awards will be given in the men’s and women’s divisions for the “Top Three” in each category.
In addition, a special “Youth BB Gun Competition,” for children 8 to 13 years of age, will be held on Sunday afternoon. Members of the Jerome Jr. BB Gun team are scheduled to compete at the Indoor Range and any individuals, or BB Gun teams, are also invited to register for this special youth match. The Daisy model 499 Target Rifle is required and non-members must provide their own rifles. The “Top Shots” of the BB Gun Match will also receive awards.
All 3-P and BB Gun competitors must preregister for the “JSA Open” by July, 25. Annual Senior Picnic
The annual Senior Picnic, hosted by the Area Agency on Aging of Somerset County, has returned. It will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. July 29, at the Somerset County Fairgrounds, 7842 Mount Davis Road, Meyersdale. Lunch is served at noon. Tickets may be purchased at any Senior Community Service Center or at the Area Agency on Aging office at 1338 S. Edgewood Ave., Somerset. For more information, call 814-443-2681. On the menu is hamburger on bun, two chicken strips, mac n' cheese and watermelon. Musical entertainment will be provided by local group The Krazy Kat Daddies. There will also be a car show. The first 25 cars to sign up get a free ticket. Plenty of parking available on-site and 1950s attire is encouraged.
Hyatt's Angels 5K and 1 mile run/walk
Registration is now open for the "Hyatt's Angels" 9th annual 5K and 1 mile fun run/walk, 9 a.m. Sept. 10, in Jennerstown. Set at Pine Springs Camp, the landscape is a 3.1 mile out and back course that weaves through the countryside. The course includes "Hyatt's Hill" right after the half-way point. Packet pick-up and same day registrations will be offered at an available. Each participant will receive a run or walk bib, commemorative T-shirt and goody bag filled with promotions and swag items. After the run, free fruit, snacks and cold beverages will be available for participants to enjoy, including the cinnamon buns from the Coal Miner's Diner in Jennerstown.
