Fly Tyer's Reunion

The 2023 Fly Tyer’s Reunion is 6-9 p.m. April 19, at the Highlands Sporting Clays Lodge, 199 Teal Drive, Champion, at Seven Springs Mountain Resort. The event will feature nationally known fly tyers from around the northeastern United States who will be demonstrating their fly tying skills and showcasing their famous and signature fly patterns. All the tyers will provide advice, answer questions and share their secrets that have helped make them among the best fly tyers in the world. The first 25 youngsters under the age of 16 who attend will receive a tying gift bag valued at $40 worth of fly tying materials. Lenny Lichvar, president of the Pennsylvania Council of Trout Unlimited and a co-author of the book "Keystone Fly Fishing," will also be on hand to discuss coldwater resource conservation issues and provide information on local angling destinations. Energy Efficiency Incentive Programs for Farms and Businesses webinar

Agricultural producer or small business owners may qualify for various federal and state energy efficiency programs. These programs may include grants, rebates, loans or tax incentives. Extension Educators will provide guidance on programs such as the Rural Energy for America Program (REAP), Agriculture Energy Efficiency Rebate Program, and tax credits for renewable projects. Extension Educators, joined by a representative from USDA, will provide information about what might qualify for these programs, timelines and application processes. Some programs can be combined for maximum savings at the project's onset and overtime from efficiency measures put in place. The webinar will take place at noon April 20. Tableland Services Inc. Early Childhood Education programs received a review of its PA Pre-K Counts and Head Start Supplemental programs. They received two perfect scores. "We are excited to continue to offer comprehensive early childhood programs for pregnant moms up to 5-year-old children. Assisting in building the educational foundation of our communities' youngest learners is our joy and responsibility," said Anne Garrison, director of Early Childhood Programs. JSO mini-series

The Johnstown Symphony Orchestra (JSO) presents its second happy hour mini-series performance at 5:30 p.m. April 21, at the Grand Halle on Broad Street. Music Director and Conductor James Blachly will host the chamber performance in the intimate setting of the Grand Halle while attendees enjoy a wine launch, food and desserts from local establishments. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. for a true happy hour with the performance beginning at 6:30 p.m. The performance will showcase the talent of the JSO’s woodwind chamber ensemble. Johnstown native Gary Gates and current winemaker for Timbre Winery, will be launching a new wine created specifically for the JSO. Titled “Antiphon: Ensemble,” all proceeds from sales will go to the “Share the Music Fund,” which offers educational experiences and reduced cost music lessons for students in the region. Food will be served from The Eastwood Inn, Ligonier, and desserts from Ryan’s Artisan’s Goods, Johnstown. The program is part of the collaboration between the Steeples Project and the JSO "inSPIREd: JSO at the Grand Halle." Earth Day

Biesecker Library and follow the trail map through Uptown while learning about the Earth, conservation, sustainability and how important it is that we are all invested in caring for our planet, our community and ourselves. Spring bazaar

The WCSC Ladies of the United Community Church along Route 281 in Ursina, annual Spring Bazaar is April 22. Homemade soups, a bake sale, greeting cards and dish cloths will be on sale. There will be White Elephant tables for those interested in junk and treasures. Lunch will also be available. The minister is the Rev. Shawn Roberts.

Annual veterans golf event

Somerset County Veterans are planning the annual “Salute to Veterans” golf day to be held May 22, at the Somerset Country Club. Going into the 12th year for this event, the organizers expect another sell-out golf outing to be consistent with past years selling out with 100 participants per each tee time at 8 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. The Somerset Country Club partners with several veterans’ organizations and local businesses to show their appreciation by offering a free day of golf to people from the county who served in the military. The golf day is free to all veterans. The Somerset County Veterans event organizers thank both past and present sponsors. “Our corporate sponsors, along with veteran and social organizations of Somerset County have really made this event a huge success,” said Barry Fitzgerald, Somerset County Veterans committee member. The lunch buffet will be open at noon with the program starting at 12:30 p.m. Organizers also anticipate 100 to 150 nongolfers at the free lunch and program, with a guest speaker. “We encourage our local veterans to attend this event,” said committee member, David Koontz. “This has been a wonderful event and we will strive to build on the successful attendance rate.” This year’s program will be on the history of the "Purple Heart" and honoring local recipients. Girl Scouts signup

Girls entering kindergarten through 12th grade in the fall and adults are invited to join Girl Scouts by participating in an early-registration program with Girl Scouts Western Pennsylvania. New members can purchase an extended-year membership at a discounted price, which will cover both the remainder of the 2023 membership year as well as the 2024 membership year. These members can join existing troops or start a new troop. Girls who are entering kindergarten in the fall of 2023 are eligible to register as a Girl Scout Daisy, preparing them for success in their first year of school. With the help of supportive adults and troop leaders, Girl Scouts experience hands-on activities in subjects ranging from STEM and the outdoors to life skills and entrepreneurship, making Girl Scouts natural leaders in the classroom, at home, and in their communities. Photo contest

Somerset Parks and Recreation Board is featuring a 2023 photo contest. The theme is "Explore the Beauty of Somerset County Parks and Trails." All proceeds go toward the construction and maintenance of the trail systems. The photo must be from the Somerset County section of the Great Allegheny Passage, the September 11th National Memorial Trail or Somerset Lake Nature Park. Prizes will go to the top three winners. There will be a People's Choice Award, based on a public Facebook vote from the Facebook page: Somerset County Parks and Recreation. Photos will be uploaded to the Facebook page June 8, and the photo with the most "likes" at 9 a.m. June 16, will win the People's Choice Award. Winners will be announced by June 23. First place prize is $140; second place $125; third place $75 and People's Choice Prize is $50 value. Deadline for submission is June 2. PA Farm Link, in collaboration with Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture's Agricultural Business Development Center, is offering a virtual continued education program on best practices for farmer and service professional working relationships, noon to 1 p.m. April 25, online only. Kaitlyn Davis and Joy Kirkpatrick, Division of Extension educators will provide an overview of a research project they are conducting to learn more about how farm businesses can best work with service professionals for productive outcomes. Kirkpatrick has worked for the University of Wisconsin for 27 years. She leads the International Farm Transition Network (IFTN) Succession Coordinator Training and facilitates farm succession planning in Wisconsin. This webinar will be beneficial to anyone involved with agriculture in a professional setting. The 2023 Cambria County Job Fair will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 2, at the 1st Summit Arena at the Cambria County War Memorial in downtown Johnstown. Lunch & Learn

Angie Richard, clinical director of Croyle-Nielsen Therapeutic Associates Inc., will present Managing Stress While Managing Your Business during a Lunch & Learn session April 25, at JARI Center. During this interactive session, she will cover how to work through communication issues post-COVID in order to get information from one department to another, how a lack of boundaries in the workplace ties to stress and tips for getting through those stressful situations. Attendees will also hear firsthand experiences from Amy Nielsen, president, Croyle-Nielsen Therapeutic Associates Inc., on how she overcame stressful situations while managing her small business.

Brooke Contacos, PHR, senior consultant and Rebecca Hancharick, associate consultant, HR Consultants Inc., will present Supervise, Lead, Manage & Engage during a Lunch & Learn session April 27, at JARI Center. Attendees will learn about the role of supervisors and management within an organization and recognize the impact they have on employee engagement. This session will also cover essential skills for leadership and understanding employee motivation and what a supervisor can do to set the stage for motivation.

The Friedens Lutheran Church is gearing up to begin the winter Coffeehouse season. All performances take place 7-9 p.m. Fridays in the church's "Friendship Hall." CACCC exhibition

The Community Arts Center of Cambria County second exhibition of 2023, "My Life and My Art, A Very Natural and Comfortable Clutter," an exhibition featuring a mixture of woodcarvings, drawings and paintingsby artist Sally Stewart, in the Goldhaber-Fend Fine Arts Center gallery. There will be more than 100 pieces on display for this exhibition. A video tour and artist lectureof the artwork will be available at the Community Arts Center’s YouTube & Facebook pages after the start of the exhibit. It will be on display through April 28. The gallery is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday – Friday, and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

Organist Emily Roy at the Grand Halle

Organist Emily Roy will be presenting her first full-length recital, performing music by Buxtehude, Sweelinck, Bach, and Mendelssohn on the richly resonant Adam Stein pipe organ, at 7:30 p.m., April 29, at the Grand Halle on Broad Street, 306 Broad St., Johnstown. Dedicating the program to the teachers who have guided her thus far, Roy will celebrate mentorship with musical selections that draw connections between musicians who were inspired by their teachers. Blue Star Event

Attention Military Families which includes National Guard, Reserve and Active Duty: the Somerset County Military Family Support Group is holding its 2nd annual Blue Star Event on June 10, starting approximately at noon in its 20th year intending to show appreciation to you for your sacrifices and and support of your military family member. Categories are: Scenic, Floral, Fauna & Birds, People, Digital Art & Alternative Processes, Black & White, and Nighttime with a maximum of two entries per category. All prints must either be an 11” x 14” print or a smaller print matted to 11” x 14.” The preceding dimensions do not include the frame. In either case, the entry shall be framed and have a horizontal wire on the back for hanging. (Digital matting is acceptable.) Spaghetti dinner

The American Legion Post 946 in Ursina will hold a spaghetti dinner from 4-6 p.m. May 11, at the Post Home. Spaghetti, meat sauce, bread, salad and dessert will be the menu. Eat in or take out. Proceeds will go to the upkeep on the building.

Chocolate Stroll

The Salvation Army Somerset Service Center Chocolate Stroll invites participants to join in an afternoon of chocolate goodies while helping the vulnerable neighbors in need, 11 a.m. May 13. Ticket offers participant to experience many different chocolate delights courtesy of participating local businesses while having the opportunity to win some prizes. At the conclusion of the Chocolate Stroll, participants will select a chocolate lollipop for an opportunity to win a prize. Begin the Chocolate Stroll at the Daily American, 334 W. Spring Fling

Welcome Back Tractorfest kick off event, the Spring Fling is from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. May 13, at the Shawnee Valley VFC Picnic Grounds, 1457 Market St., Schellsburg. Bring your tractors, hit and miss engines, chairs and EZ Ups. Talk, eat and relax. Kids games, cash raffles, homemade ice cream, live music at 3 p.m., tractor ride at 1 p.m. Breakfast served from 8-10:30 a.m. with a menu of pancakes, sausage, eggs, bacon, hashbrowns. Lunch and dinner starts at 10:30 a.m. with burgers, hot dogs, fries, chicken tenders and shrimp baskets. Proceeds benefit Shawnee Valley Volunteer Fire Co.

Help with whole-home repairs program

Tableland Services Inc. will be providing the whole-home repairs program to eligible residents of Somerset County through funding provided by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The Whole-Home Repairs Program will allow Tableland to address habitability and safety concerns, provide measures to improve energy or water efficiency and make units accessible for individuals with disabilities. Only homeowners are eligible for the program and household income must be 80% or lower of the median county income, which for a family of four is $58,250. Priority will be given to homeowners over 60, veterans, and disabled homeowners. For more information, contact Rachel at Tableland at 814-445-9628. Lions of Pennsylvania

Lions of Pennsylvania will be celebrating the 100th year of Lionism in Pennsylvania, May 18-21, by holding the 100th convention at the Kovalchick Center in Indiana, Pennsylvania. Some of the events include packing 500 buckets with cleaning supplies to be used in case of a disaster, painting party, wine-tasting event, dueling pianos show, concert by the Pennsylvania State Band, banquet with Brian Sheehan as the keynote speaker, fireworks, motivational speakers and more.
