WalkWorks Wednesdays

The Recreation Economic Committee (REC) of the Cambria Regional Chamber, in partnership with the 1889 Jefferson Center for Population Health, is bringing WalkWorks Wednesdays back to Downtown Johnstown at noon on Wednesdays, May 17-June 21. The walking group will meet near the Cambria County Library, corner of Main and Walnut streets, and will follow a predetermined route. Anyone living, working, or visiting downtown Johnstown is welcome to join this informal walking group. It will provide a great opportunity for participants to get exercise, meet new people, and share ideas. Johnstown’s WalkWorks route encompasses 1.8 miles and includes many scenic and historic sites in the city, including the Stone Bridge, the Johnstown Flood Museum, and the Iron to Arts Corridor. There is also a shorter 1-mile option. WalkWorks signs pepper the city streets to keep walkers on the correct route.

National Pike Festival

The 48th anniversary of the National Pike Festival in Addison is May 18-21. Sponsored by The Old Petersburg-Addison Historical Society Inc., events include the wagon train, Armed Forces Day Program, antique/classic car show, combined church service at St. John's Lutheran Church and more. The Humberson School, Frederick Augustine History House and Petersburg Tollhouse will be open and the firemen will have a chicken barbecue. Lions of Pennsylvania

Lions of Pennsylvania will be celebrating the 100th year of Lionism in Pennsylvania, May 18-21, by holding the 100th convention at the Kovalchick Center in Indiana, Pennsylvania. Some of the events include packing 500 buckets with cleaning supplies to be used in case of a disaster, painting party, wine-tasting event, dueling pianos show, concert by the Pennsylvania State Band, banquet with Brian Sheehan as the keynote speaker, fireworks, motivational speakers and more.

Siting and zoning considerations webinar

This webinar is geared toward municipal officials considering creating and adopting zoning ordinances. Landowners that have been approached for leasing. Business owners that might be considering installing large solar arrays. The main reference point will be the "Municipal Officials’ Guide to Grid-Scale Solar Development in Pennsylvania" that Penn State University developed. This guide will be shared with participants. The Siting and Zoning Considerations for Large-Scale Solar presentation will focus on the importance of having solar ordinances. Zoning ordinances should define exclusion areas, type of use, setback, screening, access, decommissioning, and other considerations. Examples of recently adopted regulations will also be shared. Confluence Creative Arts Center

Confluence Creative Arts Center has activities planned for the summer months. Three Chords and Be There! Jam and Folk Sing, 6:30-8:30 p.m. third Thursdays, May 18, June 15, July 20, Aug. 17. Bring your voice, your ukulele, your guitar (all acoustic instruments welcome), and your enthusiasm for a foot-tapping evening of singing and playing. Each Jam and Folk Sing will have a theme. If you want, bring along a couple of tunes or songs that you might want to do with the group. May — Train Songs (Confluence is a train town!). June — Love Songs. July — Labor/Work Songs. August — Silly Songs.

'Drinking Habits 2 — Caught in the Act'

Laurel Trinity Lutheran Church Trinity players will be performing in "Drinking Habits 2 — Caught in the Act," by Tom Smith, 7 p.m. May 19 and May 20 and at 2 p.m. May 21, at the Mountain Playhouse in Jennerstown. The Sisters miss the excitement of the old days when they were saving convents and reuniting long-lost families. So when they learn that the orphanage where Paul and Kate grew up in is in peril, they can't wait to come to the rescue. Everyone pitches in to mount a play to raise money, but it's no easy task when Kate's expecting any day. Sally's hiding from stage-fright-stricken Paul after another flight from the altar. Mother Superior's acting is unexpectedly narcoleptic, and the sister' award-winning wine keeps getting switched with the grape juice. The merry mix-ups multiply in this warm and winsome sequel to Drinking Habits. Cast members are Carol Barnick (Mother Superior), Jodie Blough (Kate), Cindy Bumbarger (Sister Philamena), Bruce Horner (Paul), Wilma Horner (Sally), Deron Koontz (Father Chenille), Scott Walker (George), and Nancy Wojnarowski (Sister Augusta). The director and casting is Biff Baron and stage manager, Peggy Yommer. A spaghetti dinner will be at 5 p.m. Saturday and at noon Sunday. Reservations are required for the dinner. Grand Halle Tea will capture 'Paris in Spring'

Beginning at 4 p.m. May 20, The Grand Halle on Broad Street’s annual spring tea will transport its participants to “Paris in Spring.” The tea theme will remind guests of a Parisian sidewalk café in the spring. Featured will be traditional sweets and savories, and an assortment of teas. Entertainment will be provided by strolling musicians on accordion and violin, serenading at the tables. Hanna's Town Resolves

Historic Hanna’s Town mini-drama production on the Hanna’s Town Resolves at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. May 20, by actors from the Freeport Theatre. This short performance follows the story of drafting the Hanna’s Town Resolves in May of 1775. The Hanna’s Town Resolves protested the injustices of the British Parliament while remaining loyal to George III, the English monarch. They did, however, resolve to resist acts like those seen in Lexington and Concord, Massachusetts, in April 1775. The citizens of Westmoreland voiced their opposition to the actions and policies of Parliament by drafting and approving the Hanna’s Town Resolves on May 16, 1775. Also at 11 a.m. for a presentation inside the Westmoreland History Education Center by Dr. William Baran. He will discuss some of Derry Township’s original settlers including a teenage Frontier Ranger named Robert Barr. Club House and Cottage Row Walking Tours

The Johnstown Flood National Memorial Park is offering Club House and Cottage Row Walking Tours May 20. This is part of the programming for the 134th anniversary of the 1889 Johnstown Flood. Club House Tour times are 10 a.m., 10:30 a.m., 11 a.m., and 11:30 a.m. Cottage Row Walking Tours are 1 p.m., 1:30 p.m., 2:30 p.m., and 3 p.m. To make a required reservation, call the Visitor Center at 814-886-6171. All tours begin at the South Fork Fishing and Hunting Club House building in Saint Michael. Tour length is approximately one hour. The Club House was the center of activity for members and guests at Lake Conemaugh. The Club House Tour includes a walk through all three floors of the building. Participants will learn about the different uses of the building through the years. This includes the years of the South Fork Fishing and Hunting Club and after. Members of the South Fork Fishing and Hunting Club built 16 cottages at Lake Conemaugh. Participants will learn about the club members that owned each cottage. Nine original cottages from the 1880s are still standing today. As many of these structures are currently occupied, the tour does not go into any buildings.

Wildflower Weekend

Wildflower Weekend on May 20 and 21, at the Laurel Hill State Park Complex. Choose a two-mile, three-mile or five-mile hike in search of spring wildflowers. May 20: Three miles at Laurel Hill State Park. Meet at the Laurel Hill Visitor Center at 9 a.m. Five miles on the Laurel Highlands Hiking Trail. Annual veterans golf event

Somerset County Veterans are planning the annual “Salute to Veterans” golf day to be held May 22, at the Somerset Country Club. Going into the 12th year for this event, the organizers expect another sell-out golf outing to be consistent with past years selling out with 100 participants per each tee time at 8 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. The Somerset Country Club partners with several veterans’ organizations and local businesses to show their appreciation by offering a free day of golf to people from the county who served in the military. The golf day is free to all veterans. The Somerset County Veterans event organizers thank both past and present sponsors. “Our corporate sponsors, along with veteran and social organizations of Somerset County have really made this event a huge success,” said Barry Fitzgerald, Somerset County Veterans committee member. The lunch buffet will be open at noon with the program starting at 12:30 p.m. Organizers also anticipate 100 to 150 nongolfers at the free lunch and program, with a guest speaker. “We encourage our local veterans to attend this event,” said committee member, David Koontz. “This has been a wonderful event and we will strive to build on the successful attendance rate.” This year’s program will be on the history of the "Purple Heart" and honoring local recipients. Berlin Memorial Day chicken barbecue

Berlin Boy Scout Troop 135 will hold its annual chicken barbecue from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 29, at the Berlin Community Grove. A complete dinner or halves only will be available to eat in or take out. This Memorial Day chicken dinner has been a tradition in the Berlin community since the 1970s when Valley Grange held them. The Boy Scouts took over in 2005 when the Grange turned it over to the Scouts.

Shanksville VBS

Shanksville area churches will hold a combined Vacation Bible School Sunday, from 6-8:40 p.m. June 25-29, at Unity United Church of Christ. The program “Keepers of the Kingdom” will help children learn how to be equipped with the armor of God to stand strong in today’s battle for truth. Three Rivers jazz

For 50 years, the Three Rivers Saxophone Quartet has been pleasing audiences with classical transcriptions of jazz standards. At 7:30 p.m. June 1, the quartet will be performing at the Grand Halle on Broad Street, Johnstown. The program will consist of classical, popular and jazz music. Some tunes will include a rhythm section. Members of the TRSQ are Marino Galluzzo, soprano saxophone; Mike Jacob, alto saxophone; Steve Ehrin, tenor saxophone; and Warren Yeckel, baritone saxophone. Special guest musicians Deb Weible on Drums and Bruce Wallace on String Bass will assist the quartet in arrangements of jazz standards. This will be the finale of the Grand Halle’s 2022-2023 Chamber Concert Series. Remembering the 1998 Tornado Outbreak: 25 Years Later

May 31 and June 2 mark the 25th anniversary of the tornadoes that struck southern Somerset County in the spring of 1998. The Meyersdale Public Library will feature a program recalling, through photos and oral history excerpts recorded at the time, this unforgettable weather week in Somerset County. The program will begin at 7 p.m. June 1, at the library. Guests are welcome and encouraged to share their own recollections and stories.

Collect and Earn

The Meyersdale Area High School marching band “Collect and Earn” event will be held June 3-7. The band will be accepting donations of used and unwanted clothing, linens, shoes, purses, toys, tools and household items. Collection bins will be set up outside of the band room doors at Meyersdale school, 1349 Shaw Mines Road, Meyersdale. Goodwill will then pay the band, per pound, for donations. Photo contest

Somerset Parks and Recreation Board is featuring a 2023 photo contest. The theme is "Explore the Beauty of Somerset County Parks and Trails." All proceeds go toward the construction and maintenance of the trail systems. The photo must be from the Somerset County section of the Great Allegheny Passage, the September 11th National Memorial Trail or Somerset Lake Nature Park. Prizes will go to the top three winners. There will be a People's Choice Award, based on a public Facebook vote from the Facebook page: Somerset County Parks and Recreation. Photos will be uploaded to the Facebook page June 8, and the photo with the most "likes" at 9 a.m. June 16, will win the People's Choice Award. Winners will be announced by June 23. Blue Star Event

Attention Military Families which includes National Guard, Reserve and Active Duty: the Somerset County Military Family Support Group is holding its 2nd annual Blue Star Event on June 10, starting approximately at noon in its 20th year intending to show appreciation to you for your sacrifices and and support of your military family member. There will be information shared, assistance available, food, fun and more. They would like to honor and recognize you with a Blue Star Flag if you have not one. There will also be a comedy show free to the families but at $10 a person to the public until capacity is met.

CACCC exhibition Shakti, the Power of the Feminine!, the Art of Nalani Bhat

The Community Arts Center of Cambria County 2023 June and July exhibition, Shakti, the Power of the Feminine!, an exhibition featuring a mixture of paintings by artist Nalini Bhat. Shakti, the Power of the Feminine! will be hosted in the Goldhaber-Fend Fine Arts Center gallery and showcase a wide variety of Nalini’s artistic works. The opening reception for this exhibit will be from 1-3 p.m. June 10. A video tour and artist lecture of the artwork will be available on the Community Arts Center’s YouTube and Facebook pages after the start of the exhibit. Shakti, the Power of the Feminine! will be on display from June 3 – July 28. The Goldhaber-Fend Fine Arts Center gallery is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday – Friday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. India Wonders: A Cultural Art Luncheon will take place 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. July 8. This luncheon will include cultural art, entertainment, and food from India Garden.

Antiques & Collectibles

The Hanna’s Town Antiques & Collectors Market is held the second Sunday of each month, May through October. The gate opens at 7:30 a.m. Sunday, and the market continues through early afternoon, although some vendors are set up by 1 p.m. Saturday and sell that afternoon. There is parking on site. Future dates for 2023 are June 11, July 9, Aug. 13, Sept. 10, and Oct. 8. Proceeds benefit the Westmoreland Historical Society’s education and preservation projects at Historic Hanna’s Town, a Revolutionary War period settlement and site of the first English courts west of the Allegheny Mountains. Picnic with the Elephants

Each participant will have the opportunity to be part of a tractor tour around the elephant grazing areas hosted by the International Conservation Center staff. Help with whole-home repairs program

Tableland Services Inc. will be providing the whole-home repairs program to eligible residents of Somerset County through funding provided by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The Whole-Home Repairs Program will allow Tableland to address habitability and safety concerns, provide measures to improve energy or water efficiency and make units accessible for individuals with disabilities. Only homeowners are eligible for the program and household income must be 80% or lower of the median county income, which for a family of four is $58,250. Priority will be given to homeowners over 60, veterans, and disabled homeowners. For more information, contact Rachel at Tableland at 814-445-9628. A premiere production from local playwright Ryan Locke, The American Old West 1876. A small town has been overtaken by a corrupt mayor and his son. Coincidentally a mysterious gunslinger arrives at the local saloon causing the townsfolk to become suspicious. Sporting Clays Tournament

Sporting Clays Tournament to benefit Somerset County Mobile Food Bank June 17, at Buffer Creek Sporting Clays, Sipesville, 776 School House Road, Somerset. Wobble trap 8 to 9:15 a.m. Registration 8 a.m. Safety meeting at 9:15 a.m. Clay shoot begins at 9:30 a.m. Registration includes T-shirt, doughnuts and coffee before the shoot, 100 sporting clays, lunch and awards ceremony. Shotgun shells and guns are not included. Prizes will be awarded to the top score for the combined team and also the top men and women shooters. Raffles will also be available. The Somerset County Mobile Food Bank is a volunteer-based nonprofit organization that supplies food each month to about 1,500 local families in need. The food bank operates mainly off of donations and grants.

Wings-n-Waves

Wings-n-Waves at the Windber Recreation Park, sponsored by the Windber Municipal Authority. Three local restaurants and bars compete head to head each week 6-10 p.m. Thursdays to crown the 2023 Wings-n-Waves Champions. Enjoy a night swim in the lighted pool.
