Make-A-Wish® seeking volunteers

Children who are living with critical illnesses need the transformational power of a wish. Make-A-Wish needs Pennsylvania residents to make it happen by volunteering their time and compassion to assist with fulfilling wishes. Make-A-Wish is hosting virtual information sessions at 4:30 p.m. April 12. Photo contest

Somerset Parks and Recreation Board is featuring a 2023 photo contest. The theme is "Explore the Beauty of Somerset County Parks and Trails." All proceeds go toward the construction and maintenance of the trail systems. The photo must be from the Somerset County section of the Great Allegheny Passage, the September 11th National Memorial Trail or Somerset Lake Nature Park. Prizes will go to the top three winners. There will be a People's Choice Award, based on a public Facebook vote from the Facebook page: Somerset County Parks and Recreation. Photos will be uploaded to the Facebook page June 8, and the photo with the most "likes" at 9 a.m. June 16, will win the People's Choice Award. Winners will be announced by June 23. First place prize is $140; second place $125; third place $75 and People's Choice Prize is $50 value. Deadline for submission is June 2. Schoolhouse Rock LIVE! Jr.

The Community Arts Center of Cambria County (CACCC) is producing Log Art Theatre Academy’s first musical of 2023 withSchoolhouse Rock LIVE! Jr. at 6 p.m. April 14 and 15, and at 2 p.m. April 16, in the M. Josephine Paul Family Museum on CACCC’s site location.Participating children and youth include ages 5 through 18 years. Children and youth are able to become educated at a professional level through the use of complete performance production experiences. 'Around the World at Springtime'

The Greater Johnstown Community Chorus presents “Around the World at Springtime” at 7 p.m. April 14, at Mount Calvary Lutheran Church on Scalp Avenue in Johnstown. Directed by Zing Allsopp and accompanied by Jeff Hornick, the chorus will present a selection of songs from different parts of the world: "Siyahamba," a Zulu song; "Song for the Mira" from Nova Scotia in Canada; "By Yon Bonnie Banks" from Scotland; African-American spiritual, "Joshua Fit the Battle of Jericho;" and several others. Millions for Agriculture

The Millions for Agriculture meeting will be held at 7:30 p.m. April 26, at the Saylor Farm’s Country Dreams facility, 882 Chippewa Road, Rockwood. More than $3 million will be available for farmers in Somerset County to implement projects to improve farm operations, increase productivity and income and protect the environment through the Agriculture Conservation Assistance Program (ACAP). Specific information will be provided about how farmers can take advantage of this new opportunity. A soil health demonstration will also be included in the program. The meeting is being sponsored by the Somerset County Farm Bureau, the Somerset Conservation District and the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS). Children’s Book Festival

The Learning Lamp, 2025 Bedford St., Johnstown, and 1st Summit Bank present the Children’s Book Festival that returns for a fun-filled weekend on April 15 and 16, at the Bottle Works Ethnic Arts Center, 411 Third Ave., Johnstown. The festival plays host to a weekend stacked with award-winning children’s authors and illustrators, as well as activities and entertainment for children and families of all ages and backgrounds. Haunted History Program

PASUVCW Jacob M. Campbell Camp 14 and Greater Johnstown Lodge No. 538 presents a haunted history program, 2 p.m. April 15, at the Johnstown Masonic Conference and Event Center, 130 Valley Pike, Johnstown. Step into the past and explore historic downtown Johnstown with a PowerPoint presentation featuring costumed interpreters. The Dunnings Creek Friends Meeting (Quakers) will present the Spring ’23 event in their "Still Listening" guest speaker series on local history in April, at 2 p.m. April 16, at the historic Dunnings Creek Friends Meetinghouse (also known as the Old Brick Quaker Church), 285 Old Quaker Church Road, Fishertown, as well asonline via Zoom. Delores “Dee” Marshall Myers of Everett will present The Testimony of a Black Woman: Love Justice Equality, relating her experiences growing up and living in the small rural town of Everett. A lifelong resident born and raised in Everett, Delores tells of growing up under segregation, and of the challenges and changes for Black people in rural Pennsylvania from the 1940s through the present day. Delores worked 25 years in her parents’ dry cleaning plant in town, 21 years as assistant general manager at Bob Evans restaurant, and served six years on the Everett Area school board. She will share her first-hand experiences of race relations, personal interactions, and perspectives on community. There is no admission charge. Light refreshments will be served. Seating is limited. Fly Tyer's Reunion

The 2023 Fly Tyer’s Reunion is 6-9 p.m. April 19, at the Highlands Sporting Clays Lodge,199 Teal Drive, Champion, at Seven Springs Mountain Resort in Somerset County. The event will feature nationally known fly tyers from around the northeastern United States who will be demonstrating their fly tying skills and showcasing their famous and signature fly patterns. All the tiers will provide advice, answer questions and share their secrets that have helped make them among the best fly tiers in the world. The first 25 youngsters under the age of 16 who attend will receive a tying gift bag valued at $40 worth of fly tying materials. Lenny Lichvar, president of the Pennsylvania Council of Trout Unlimited and a co-author of the book "Keystone Fly Fishing," will also be on hand to discuss coldwater resource conservation issues and provide information on local angling destinations. Energy Efficiency Incentive Programs for Farms and Businesses webinar

Agricultural producer or small business owners may qualify for various federal and state energy efficiency programs. These programs may include grants, rebates, loans, or tax incentives. Extension Educators will provide guidance on programs such as the Rural Energy for America Program (REAP), Agriculture Energy Efficiency Rebate Program, and tax credits for renewable projects. Extension Educators, joined by a representative from USDA, will provide information about what might qualify for these programs, timelines and application processes. Some programs can be combined for maximum savings at the project's onset and overtime from efficiency measures put in place. The webinar will take place at noon April 20. Girl Scouts signup

Girls entering kindergarten through 12th grade in the fall and adults are invited to join Girl Scouts by participating in an early-registration program with Girl Scouts Western Pennsylvania. Free Continued Education Webinar

PA Farm Link, in collaboration with Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture's Agricultural Business Development Center, is offering a virtual continued education program on best practices for farmer and service professional working relationships, noon to 1 p.m. April 25, online only. Kaitlyn Davis and Joy Kirkpatrick, Division of Extension educators will provide an overview of a research project they are conducting to learn more about how farm businesses can best work with service professionals for productive outcomes. Kirkpatrick has worked for the University of Wisconsin for 27 years. She leads the International Farm Transition Network (IFTN) Succession Coordinator Training and facilitates farm succession planning in Wisconsin. This webinar will be beneficial to anyone involved with agriculture in a professional setting. Farmers will also find the information helpful as they consider working relationships in their farm businesses. Cambria County Job Fair

The 2023 Cambria County Job Fair will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 2, at the 1st Summit Arena at the Cambria County War Memorial in downtown Johnstown. Employers will have the opportunity to recruit from a diverse group of qualified candidates. Job seekers of all ages are invited to attend this free event and to bring their resumes for distribution. Local workforce experts will be on hand to answer questions and provide information on job search resources and recruitment materials for employers. The Friedens Lutheran Church is gearing up to begin the winter Coffeehouse season. All performances take place 7-9 p.m. Fridays in the church's "Friendship Hall." CACCC exhibition

The Community Arts Center of Cambria County second exhibition of 2023, "My Life and My Art, A Very Natural and Comfortable Clutter," an exhibition featuring a mixture of woodcarvings, drawings and paintingsby artist Sally Stewart, in the Goldhaber-Fend Fine Arts Center gallery. There will be more than 100 pieces on display for this exhibition. A video tour and artist lectureof the artwork will be available at the Community Arts Center’s YouTube & Facebook pages after the start of the exhibit. Organist Emily Roy at the Grand Halle

Organist Emily Roy will be presenting her first full-length recital, performing music by Buxtehude, Sweelinck, Bach, and Mendelssohn on the richly resonant Adam Stein pipe organ, at 7:30 p.m., April 29, at the Grand Halle on Broad Street, 306 Broad Street, Johnstown. Dedicating the program to the teachers who have guided her thus far, Ms. Roy will celebrate mentorship with musical selections that draw connections between musicians who were inspired by their teachers. Blue Star Event

Attention Military Families which includes National Guard, Reserve and Active Duty: the Somerset County Military Family Support Group is holding its 2nd annual Blue Star Event on June 10, starting approximately at noon in its 20th year intending to show appreciation to you for your sacrifices and and support of your military family member. There will be information shared, assistance available, food, fun and more. They would like to honor and recognize you with a Blue Star Flag if you have not one. There will also be a comedy show free to the families but at $10 a person to the public until capacity is met.

The third iteration of the trail features breweries, wineries, distilleries, meaderies and cideries in Fayette, Somerset and Westmoreland counties. Glades Pike Winery in Somerset, Quinn Brewing Co. Tap Room in Central City, Tall Pines Distillery in Salisbury, Whitehorse Brewing in Berlin, Vin de Matrix Winery in Rockwood and Ponfeigh Distillery, which expects to open later this year, are other Somerset County partners. After users pick up a free passport or download the app, they will get stickers by making purchases from participating locations — or uploading a picture to the app for verification purposes. After collecting enough stickers, they are eligible for prizes. The printed passport features a map to help users locate beverage makers while the app uses GPS to determine the nearest Pour Tour partner. Pour Tour 3.0 prizes include a free T-shirt (15 stickers or check-ins), a growler or stainless steel flask (30 stickers or check-ins) and a canvas/leather wine tote or portable outdoor beverage table (45 stickers or check-ins). Those who complete Tier 3 will be entered into a drawing for a Laurel Highlands getaway. Pour Tour 3.0 ends on Dec. 31.

Festival needs volunteers

Laurel Highlands Historical Village is hosting the Cambria County Arts & Heritage Festival Sept. 9-10, at Duman Lake County Park. They are looking for nonprofit organizations to be a part of this huge event. It is a way to not only show case your heritage but show case your efforts and reach the general public and explain what you organization can do for everyone. Help with whole-home repairs program

Tableland Services Inc. will be providing the whole-home repairs program to eligible residents of Somerset County through funding provided by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The Whole-Home Repairs Program will allow Tableland to address habitability and safety concerns, provide measures to improve energy or water efficiency and make units accessible for individuals with disabilities. Only homeowners are eligible for the program and household income must be 80% or lower of the median county income, which for a family of four is  $58,250. Priority will be given to homeowners over 60, veterans, and disabled homeowners. For more information, contact Rachel at Tableland at 814-445-9628.
