Kolo dance lessons

St. Rochus Society ― Croatian Hall Lodge No. 5 will offer traditional Kolo dance lessons beginning Aug. 30 at Croatian Hall, 612 Broad St. in the Cambria City section of Johnstown. Classes on the traditional Croatian, Serbian, and other ethnic dance will be offered from 7-8:30 p.m. Aug. 30-31. and Sept. 6, 7, and 13. Classes are being offered in anticipation of Johnstown Slavic Fest, which will be taking place Sept. 15 and 16 at the Heritage Discovery Center on Broad Street. There is no fee to attend classes. Camp Cadet of Somerset County Sporting Clays fundraiser

Camp Cadet of Somerset County will be hosting a benefit sporting clays event on Sept. 16, at Buffer Creek Sporting Clays, Somerset. Sign-in begins at 8 a.m. Registration is charged per shooter and there are four shooters per squad and must be received by Aug. 31. There will be a limit of 30 (4 person) squads accepted. Registration includes targets, golf cart and lunch. Ammunition is not included. Guns will be available for rental and ammunition will be available for purchase from Buffer Creek Sporting Clays. Donations are being accepted for raffle baskets and gift cards. A variety of business/organization sponsorship opportunities are also available. All proceeds from the event will benefit Camp Cadet. Senior Expo

Pennsylvania Sen. Pat Stefano (R-32) and Rep. Jesse Topper (R-Bedford) are hosting a free Senior Expo from 10 a.m. to noon Sept. 1, at the Bedford Fairgrounds, 729 W. Pitt St., Bedford. The expo will give residents the opportunity to learn about resources and programs provided by state government, as well as local nonprofit and community groups in the area. J.B. Schrock 75th Anniversary

The J.B. Schrock Playground, 700 South St., Berlin, a 75th-anniversary celebration is 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Sept. 2. There will be games, a toddler bouncy house, basket fundraiser, face painting, music, a cake walk, and food for sale. I.O.O.F. annual Picnic

The Independent Order of Odd Fellows' 102nd annual I.O.O.F. Picnic, celebrating 204 years of Oddfellowship is Sept. 2, at Kingwood Grove, Route 281, Kingwood. The Community Arts Center of Cambria County (CACCC) 52nd Log House Arts Festival from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 2-3, on CACCC's 2.4 acres in the Westmont section of Johnstown. Special fundraising event for CACCC includes quality handcrafted and juried artists and craftsmen selling and demonstrating original work. Forest Hills Labor Day Weekend Festival

The Adams Township Volunteer Fire Department No. 2 2023 Forest Hills Labor Day Weekend Festival at the Berwind Wayside Park in Saint Michael, is Sept. 2-4. The festival will feature a wide variety of music entertainment, activities, vendors, and a fireworks show. Highlights include: all-you-can-eat breakfast each day from 7–11 a.m. in the firehall; many food vendors serving a variety of food; and a large handmade craft vendor area with an array of items for patrons to purchase. Mountain Craft Days

Mountain Craft Days is the Somerset Historical Center’s major educational event from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day, Sept. 8-10. Jenner Rod & Gun Club annual Youth Clay Shoot

Jenner Rod & Gun Club 11th annual Youth Clay Shoot is Sept. 9, at the club shooting range, 157 Geiger Road, Friedens. Pre-registration is strongly encouraged. To register, call 814-629-5809. Sign-in will be at 8 a.m. The event begins at 9 a.m. This free event is open to all community youth ages 15 and under. Club membership is not required. A parent or legal guardian must accompany the youth to the shoot. Participants should bring their own gun. If they do not have a gun, one will be available for use. Safety glasses, ear protection, 12 and 20-gauge ammo and clays will be provided. Youth participants will be treated to a picnic-style lunch. All youth shooters frombeginner to advanced are welcome to participate. All participants will have a chance to win a door prize and a chance to win a shotgun. If the event would have to be rescheduled because of severe weather conditions, participants will be notified by phone.

Community dinner

Community dinner from 4-7 p.m. Sept. 9, at New Hope Church, 3404 Cumberland Highway, Meyersdale. Drop box donations will benefit the Berlin, Meyersdale and Wellersburg volunteer fire departments. Menu: stuffed chicken breast, mashed potatoes with gravy, corn, roast beef, green beans, gob cake, ice tea, lemonade, coffee, water. Eat in only, outside pavilion or church (no takeouts). Sitting Bulls new player registration

Sitting Bulls Disabled Sled Hockey new player registration day for the 2023-2024 season is 6-7:30 p.m. Sept. 9, at Galactic Ice, Altoona, and 6-7:30 p.m. Sept. 16 at NCRC (North Center Recreation Center Rink), Ebensburg. This is for children (school age) and adults who would be interested in participating in a competitive sport of sled hockey designed for those with a physical disability. All needed hockey equipment and sleds will be available at these practices for potential players to try sled hockey. Please pre-register. Physically disabled hockey players sit in specially designed sleds that are placed on top of two hockey skate blades. Each player uses two special hockey sticks with metal picks on the butt end, instead of one, to propel themselves on the ice. Sled hockey is played on a standard sized rink with the same size puck and nets. Sitting Bulls Sled Hockey has disabled athletes from Cambria, Somerset, Indiana, Centre and Blair counties. During the 2023-2024 hockey season hockey, practices will be held at NCRC in Ebensburg and Galactic Ice in Altoona. Unite on the Rock

Traveling evangelist Jay Lowder and recording artist Jason Crabb will headline "Unite on the Rock" at the Allegany County Fairgrounds on Sept. 10-12. This Christian faith festival is free. Lowder, who served as the guest speaker during the region’s National Day of Prayer events held in May, brings an energetic message of hope to reach those struggling with depression, addiction, and lost purpose. “Fields of Faith” will kick off the event on Sunday with a focus on area youth. A car show, disc golf, cornhole, and other field games will begin at 3 p.m. Food and activities will be offered from 4-6 p.m. Fellowship with Christian Athletes will begin at 6 p.m. The main service will begin at 7 p.m. with worship by Crabb and a message from Lowder. The evening will wrap up with prize giveaways. On Monday and Tuesday evenings, “The Harvest” will begin with worship at 7 p.m. followed by a message from Lowder. A community choir will participate both nights, and a pre-worship concert will be featured Monday at 6 p.m. Free transportation will be available from certain locations throughout Allegany County. Golf Tournament for Benevolent Care Fund

Laurel View Village, a full-service Continuing Care Retirement Community's (CCRC) annual golf tournament is Sept. 13, at Windber Country Club. The day will include a boxed lunch, 18 holes of golf with cart, golf shirt, dinner, and prizes. This event is specifically designed to raise funds for The Caring Fund, a restricted endowment, whose sole purpose is to assist residents whose financial resources, through no fault of their own, are insufficient to cover the cost of their care, at Laurel View Village. Last year alone, Laurel View Village provided residents with more than $800,00 in benevolent assistance. To pay for this care, Laurel View Village relies on contributions from individual donors, corporate donors, and fundraising events such as this golf tournament, an annual pledge dinner, basket party and Christmas in the Village vendor show. Sporting clays fundraiser

The Salvation Army Western Pennsylvania Division hosting the sixth annual Shoot for Hope fundraiser, in honor of Michael Stark. This annual sporting clay fundraiser benefits Pathway of Hope, a program that aims to empower families and end generational poverty. Participants will spend the day shooting clay targets at this outdoor event, presented by BNY Mellon and the Stark family, on Sept. 14, at Highlands Sporting Clays, with accommodations provided by Seven Springs Mountain Resort. Registration will open at 8 a.m., followed by safety training at 9:45 a.m., a shotgun start at 10 a.m., followed by a buffet lunch and awards. Spaghetti dinner

Spaghetti dinner from 4-6 p.m. Sept. 14, at the Ursina American Legion Post 946 Home. Menu will be spaghetti, meat sauce, salad, bread and dessert. Eat-in or take-out. Proceeds go for the upkeep of the building.

Fall 'in Baconfest

The Richland Township Volunteer Fire Department Fall 'in Baconfest is from 5-9 p.m. Sept. 15 and 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sept 16, at the Geistown Fire Station, 631 Lamberd Ave., Geistown. Gary Antol and Jesse Eisenbise will appear at VOMA Sept. 15, as part of the VOMA Folk and Bluegrass Series. The show is for all ages. NRA banquet

The friends of the NRA will be hosting a banquet Sept. 17, at the Bakersville fire hall. Doors open at 2 p.m. Tickets available by contacting Bob Barnes at 814-442-8077. This is a fundraiser for shooting sports, raising money for the high school shooting teams, Boy Scouts, 4-H, or any other organization requesting grants to promote the shooting sports. Family Hospice grief support group

Family Hospice, Part of UPMC, is offering free grief support sessions at the Family Hospice (formerly In Touch Hospice) office, 1474 N. Center Ave., Somerset. Groups will be held from 6-7 p.m. Tuesdays from Sept. 19-Oct. 10. Family Hospice Spiritual Counselor the Rev. Duane Riddle is facilitating this group for attendees to share their feelings with others who are grieving. Space is limited. Registration is required by Sept. 18 by contacting the Rev. Play Among the Stars

The Moxham Renaissance will host Play Among the Stars: An Evening with Sinatra at the Russell House, 538 Russell Ave., Johnstown, from 5:30–10 p.m. Sept. 29-30. The event will benefit the preservation efforts for the Russell House, a Classical Revival-style house built in 1902 by local architect Walter R. Myton for John Albert Grazier, president of the Grazier Coal Mining Co. Seating is limited – tickets in the initial offering sold so quickly that a second night was added. Night market once a month, every second Thursday through September. Live entertainment will be featured at all-night markets. Access to locally sourced produce, artisan-made goods and ready-to-eat foods. The SNAP program will be part of this market season.

Maple City Farmers' Market

The Maple City Farmers' Market is the second Wednesday of the month, through September, from 4-7 p.m. at uptown Meyersdale on the corner of Main and Center streets. Sept. 13. Live music in the gazbo.

21ST annual Cambria County College Fair

The 21st annual Cambria County College Fair will be held from 8:30-11:30 a.m. Sept. 19, inside the main gym of Pennsylvania Highlands Community College’s Richland Campus. This event, which is sponsored and hosted by Pennsylvania Highlands, is open to anyone, including students, parents, and the public, who are looking to further their education or trade. More than 50 representatives will likely be appearing at the fair, including four-year universities, technical schools, business colleges, cosmetology schools and universities, branches of the military, local businesses, and more.

Car seat check

The Pennsylvania State Police free car seat check is 2:30-5:30 p.m. Sept. 20, at Memorial Highway Chevrolet, 2006 N. Center Ave., Somerset.

Cars and Crafts

The Shanksville Volunteer Fire Department Cars and Crafts Show is Sept. 23, Shanksville Community Grove, 1291 Cornerstone Road, Shanksville. Cars, trucks, semi trucks, tractors are welcome. Show starts at 2 p.m. Judging at 4 p.m. Prizes presented at 5 p.m. Food and drink available for purchase. Music from 3-6 p.m. Small games of chance, craft vendors. Oldies Record Hop

Ligonier Night Market

The monthly Ligonier Night Market is around The Diamond and along Main Street in historic downtown Ligonier. Food products from more than 30 local farmers and food processors. The Ligonier Country Market (LCM) and the Ligonier Valley Chamber of Commerce co-sponsor the Night Market, from 5-8 p.m. Sept. 21. Musical entertainment schedule: artists will perform on the Diamond Park bandstand: Sept. 21: Cashout. Books Come Alive ― a unique library-based outreach program that takes best-loved children's books and turns them into 30-minute musicals.
