'Still Listening' speaker series

The Dunnings Creek Friends Meeting (Quakers) will present the first in its 'Still Listening’ guest speaker series on local history in September at the historic Dunnings Creek Friends Meetinghouse (also known as the Old Brick Quaker Church), 285 Old Quaker Church Road, Fishertown, as well as online via Zoom, at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 21. Journalist Cody McDevitt of Somerset, author of "Banished From Johnstown: Racist Backlash in Western Pennsylvania"(2020), will tell the little-known history of the time in 1923 when Black and Hispanic residents were evicted and forced to flee Johnstown in fear for their lives. This is considered one of the worst civil rights injustices in Pennsylvania history, yet few local people are aware that it even happened. After the presentation, the author will be available to answer questions, and copies of the book will be available for sale. The event will be held There is no admission charge. Light refreshments.

Relay For Life kickoff

The American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Somerset will be hosting a pot luck celebration at 6 p.m. Sept. 21, at Faith Lutheran Church, Somerset, to kick off the new event season. Returning teams and anyone interested in starting a team or helping on the organizational committee are invited to bring their favorite pot luck dish. The volunteer event leadership team is encouraging area businesses, school groups, faith-based groups, families, friends and community organizations to form a team and join the 2023 Relay For Life of Somerset. There is no fee to register. Teams can participate in event-wide fundraisers and/or do their own choice of fundraising activities. To help new teams get started, resources, support and guidance are available from the volunteer event leadership team, online and through their ACS staff partner. There is no minimum amount that a team is required to raise.

Clymer Days Festival

The Clymer Days Festival is Sept. 23-25, at the Sherman Street Park in Clymer. This family event returns with all the activities, music entertainment, vendors, car and motorcycle shows, kid’s activities, and premier fireworks show that people have come to enjoy. Fall Craft Bazaar

New Beginnings Outreach Center Church will host its annual Fall Craft Bazaar with a sub and pizza sale and youth hosted concession stand from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 24, in the Dream Center. Subs and pizzas are from Kovals. Proceeds benefit Operation Christmas Child from the sub and pizza sale. The sale goes until items are sold. Pre-order items by calling the church at 814-629-5001. Jackie’s Garden Works Rooftop Concert Series

Jackie’s Garden Works Concert Series invites music lovers of all ages to enjoy live performances, food and drinks in one of Johnstown's unique venues. Doors open at 6 p.m. and music starts at 7 p.m. at the rooftop terrace atop of the ArtWorks Building, 413 Third Ave., Johnstown. Mt. Davis Gravel Grinder

The 5th annual Mt. Davis Gravel Grinder at 9:30 a.m. Sept. 24, rain or shine, is a gravel road bicycle race on a course that will take you up and over the highest point in the state. I Love Lucy 'Babalu! Chaos at the Cabana!'

The Community Arts Center of Cambria County is bringing another Log Art Theatre Murder Mystery Dinner Theatre production with I Love Lucy “Babalu! Chaos at the Cabana!” Sept. 24 — dinner served at 6 p.m., and Sept. 25 — dinner served at 1 p.m. (matinee), performedby Iron Bridge Dinner Theatre in the Atelier and Studio on the second floor of the Arts Center, 1217 Menoher Boulevard, in the Westmont section of Johnstown. I Love Lucy “Babalu! Chaos at the Cabana!” is a hysterical comedy that is full of twists and turns, love, death and betrayal. Recycling Collection Day

The Somerset County Recycling Program first collection day for recyclables, sponsored by the Somerset CountyCommissioners, is between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Sept. 24, at the Friedens Lutheran Church. There is no cost to drop off recyclables at this event. Corrugated cardboard, newspaper, office paper, mixed paper, aluminum cans,plastic No. 1, and plastic No. 2 will all be accepted. Rinse and empty the bottles and cans, and flatten the cardboard. All materials dropped off must be separated, as there will be seven separate containers set up for each recyclable material. Jenner Rod & Gun Club Youth Clay Shoot

The Jenner Rod & Gun Club will be sponsoring its annual Youth Clay Shoot Sept. 24, at the Club Shooting Range, 157 Geiger Road, Friedens. Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m. and the shoot will begin at 9 a.m. The event is open to any area youth 15 and under and beginners are encouraged to attend. The day includes a firearms safety session, various skill competitions for all ages, picnic lunch and lots of prizes. 6th annual Recovery in the Valley

Magellan Behavioral Health of Pennsylvania Inc. (Magellan) will host the 6th annual Recovery in the Valley in Johnstown, from 1-5 p.m. Sept. 24, in Johnstown’s Roxbury Park, 1430 Franklin St., in collaboration with Behavioral Health of Cambria County, the Cambria County Behavioral Health Services Program, and the Cambria County Drug Coalition. The event will include: featured speakers that have found recovery; resource tables hosted by behavioral health and substance use providers; public information about different pathways of recovery; various church groups offering help to those struggling with substance use disorders; family entertainment including a bounce house; photo booth; and free food and refreshments. Paint a Slate

The Episcopal Church Women of St. Francis in the Fields, 2081 Husband Road, Somerset, is sponsoring a Paint a Slate event Sept. 24. For a fee, participants will be offered a choice of executing a floral or a fall pumpkin painting on a slate suitable for hanging. Makayla of Sun Hat Gallery will be the instructor. Wings and Wheels Pancake Breakfast

A World War II aircraft of the Capital Wing of the Commemorative Air Force (CAF) returns to the Cumberland, Maryland, airport on Sept. 25, to provide warbird rides for the public. The Fairchild UC-61 Forwarder warbird will appear at the EAA (Experimental Aircraft Association) Wings and Wheels Pancake Breakfast. The event is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. with no parking or entrance fees. A pancake breakfast is available from 8 a.m. to noon. The public will have the opportunity to purchase warbird rides in the Fairchild as a tribute to the thousands of men and women who built, serviced and flew this type of aircraft. Advance ticketing for a Fairchild flight is available online at https://www.capitalwingwarbirdrides.org/. Flight seats not sold in advance will be available for sale on-site at the airport. There will be other attractions for the entire family at the airport. On static display from the Capital Wing will be a 2021 Corvette Stingray convertible (shown) and a unique Ukrainian Ural off-road motorcycle with sidecar. Rides will be available in the sidecar for a donation to the nonprofit Capital Wing. Also at the event will be antique and classic cars, a 1950 Mack fire engine, the Cumberland Police MRAP and model airplane displays. Heritage Hike: Inclined Plane No. 8

Join a Park Ranger at the Allegheny Portage Railroad National Historic Site, 10 miles west of Altoona, for a three mile hike of Inclined Plane No. 8 at 2 p.m. Sept. 25. Reservations are required for this free hike and can be made by calling the Visitor Center at 814-886-6150. Of the 10 inclined planes on the Allegheny Portage Railroad, No. 8 was the longest and steepest. Participants will learn about the inclined planes and levels of the railroad, how the system functioned, and view a historic culvert. Participants are encouraged to wear good walking shoes and bring water. The hike contains steep slopes and rough surfaces. It will take place rain or shine. Haunted Hills Estate Scream Park

Haunted Hills Estate Scream Park, 236 Rolling Hills Estate Road, Uniontown, added three brand-new attractions for the 2022 season. The park will run weekend nights through Nov. 5. The most significant addition is Twisted Nightmare 3-D, a walk-through attraction that combines high-tech effects, horrifying, distorted clown characters, and Chromadepth 3D technology to produce a dizzying trip through a nightmarish funhouse. Also debuting at the park is a Mutant Paintball experience as well as Stalker Hollow Corn Field, where visitors must survive encounters with Cryptids. The Park’s creative team has added new walk-through sections to their “fan favorite” attraction, The House, as well as a new interactive “flashlight” element. Patrons brave enough to trek through the famed “Woods Trails” that gave the park its reputation in the 2000s, will experience new sections of path, new effects and several new scenes in “The Burial,” “Deadwoods” and “Sin Creek.” Order a “Scream Park Shake” or a “Twisted Nightmare Shake” at Day & Night Exotic Cereal Bar in Morgantown, West Virginia. 'Loretta Hummel & Country Grass'

Loretta Hummel & Country Grass will present a program at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 26, at the Folk Meeting House, 1711 Springs Road, Springs. Hummel, local singer, songwriter, and guitarist from Grantsville, Maryland, has recently been honored with the International Country Gospel Music Association’s “Bluegrass Artist of the Year” Gold Cross Award during its 2022 convention in West Plains, Missouri. Performing with Hummel will be Paul Dix, playing the mandolin, and Robyn Bagley, playing the bass guitar. Hummel will also be performing at the Springs Folk Festival from 1-2 p.m. Sept. 8. Steam train ride

Somerset County Military Family Support Group's 19th annual Candlelight Vigil is at 7 p.m. Oct. 1, at the Somerset County Courthouse. In case of inclement weather, the location will be moved indoors. Williamson reunion

The Williamson's are planning a family reunion on Oct. 1, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Buckstown. The theme of the event is "Back to the Roots." Descendants of Charles Wesley Williamson, a Somerset County Commissioner in the 1890s, are gathering at the church from noon until 4 p.m. A speaker from the Lincoln Highway Heritage Corridor will speak about the historical significance of the Lincoln Highway that runs through Buckstown, which was once abustling village along the main transportation artery between Philadelphia to Pittsburgh and farther west. The Fast & Furriest Car Show benefiting the Humane Society of Somerset County is Oct. 1, at Memorial Highway Chevrolet in Somerset. Tire Collection Day

The Somerset County Commissioners are sponsoring a Tire Collection Day between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. Oct. 1, at the Conemaugh Township Municipal Building. Car ties, 19.5 tires and tractor trailer tires will be accepted for a cost per tire. However, agriculture tires will not be accepted. Tires may be dropped off on a rim or off a rim. The tires collected at this event will all be recycled through Penn Turf. Cash and checks addressed to "County of Somerset" will be accepted at the time of the drop off. Photography exhibit

A photography exhibit "Between the Light and the Shadow" by Eric Falk will be held at the renovated barn on the grounds of St. John the Baptist Church, Findley Street, New Baltimore, from 2-6 p.m. Oct. 1. The exhibit is currently a work in progress toward a more permanent depiction of this very special place, New Baltimore. What specific form that permanent reminder will be is not yet finalized — a book is the hope. It takes many of the images he has made of the town and its people since 2019 and combines them with archival images from various sources to tell the story of this town. Members of the community are asked to share their memories, thoughts and feelings by writing on the images during the actual exhibition.

Blessing of the Animals

The annual Blessing of the Animals will be held at 11 a.m. Oct. 1, at the Friedens Lutheran Church, 131 South Main St., Friedens. Bring cats, dogs, chickens, guinea pigs, etc. The service of blessing will be held under the church carport, rain or shine. There will be treat bags for all the pets and treats and refreshments for the people attending. Free fishing event military veterans

Military veterans are invited to a free day of fishing, food and fun at Kingston Veterans and Sportsmans Club in Latrobe Oct. 1. The event, which is in its fifth year, is sponsored by the Forbes Trail and Ken Sink chapters of Trout Unlimited along with Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing. Originally designed for military veterans with disabilities, it is now open to all veterans ranging from experienced anglers to those fishing for the first time. Trout Unlimited will provide one-on-one instructions and a full-time mentor along with gear for those who need it. Veterans can bring a guest. Lunch, bottled drinks and snacks will be provided at the facility, which features a large lake with easy wheelchair access and ADA accessibility along with two pavilions and portable restrooms. Veteran’s name and contact information deadline was Sept. 19. Attendees are asked to provide their own transportation and bring a camping chair.

Annual Youth Pheasant Hunt

The Jenner Rod and Gun Club sponsors its annual Youth Pheasant Hunt at 8 a.m. Oct. 8, at the club’s main picnic grounds located at 157 Geiger Road, Friedens.
