What's Happening? Here are 10 upcoming events in the Fayetteville area

The official start of summer is right around the corner, but the warm weather is already in the city. There are a variety of events in the area that take advantage of the sultry days.

The Fayetteville/Cumberland Parks & Recreation Department's splash pads have been open since May 1.

The Parks & Recreation maintains the following 11 splash pads with another on the way at Lake Rim Recreation Center:

  • Eastover Community Park, 2721 Ball Park Road, Eastover

  • E. Melvin Honeycutt, 4665 Lakewood Drive

  • Gilmore Therapeutic Recreation Center, 1600 Purdue Drive

  • Gray's Creek Park, 5151 Celebration Drive

  • J.S. Spivey Recreation Center, 500 Fisher St.

  • Kiwanis Recreation Center, 352 Devers St.

  • Linden Little River Community Park, 5010 Loop Road, Linden

  • Massey Hill Recreation Center,  1612 Camden Road

  • Myers Recreation Center,  1018 Rochester Drive

  • Wade Community Park,  4060 Church St., Wade

  • Willie J. Burnette Park, 4924 Markham St., Godwin

The splash pads are open from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday through Friday and 2-6 p.m. on Sunday until Sept. 30. When school is in session, the splash pad hours are 3-6 p.m. at Gray's Creek, Lake Rim and JS Spivey parks and 3:30-6 p.m. at E. Melvin Honeycutt and Massey Hill parks.

Chalk the Walk

The Downtown Alliance will host a Chalk the Walk event from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday in downtown Fayetteville.

To participate in the event, look for chalk outside of participating businesses or bring your own and add creative drawings to the sidewalks downtown.

Legacy Ball

The Airborne & Special Operations Museum Foundation will host the Legacy Ball at 6 p.m. Saturday at the museum, 100 Bragg Boulevard.

The event celebrates the history of airborne and special operations soldiers. The dress code is black tie or military dress equivalent. Valet parking is available.

Youth Empowerment Group

Fayetteville Pride hosts its monthly meeting for youth ages 12 to 19 from 2-4 p.m. Saturday.

The event aims to provide a safe space to engage and empower one another. Participants are encouraged to explore their identity, interpersonal development and skills through artistic expression.

Participants can register through this Google form. Email youth@fayettevillepride.org for more information or to register.

Symphony on Tap

The Fayetteville Symphony Orchestra hosts another Symphony on Tap event at noon Sunday at District House of Taps, 1240 Fort Bragg Road.

The free event is part of a series with the goal to engage the community through music and beer.

Yoga in the Garden 

Yoga in the Garden is 6-7 p.m. Thursday at Cape Fear Botanical Garden, 536 North Eastern Blvd. 

The event is free to members and $10 for non-members. The event is recurring weekly on Thursday.

An Evening of Art and Wine

An Evening of Art and Wine is Thursday 5-7 p.m. at Lisa's Custom Framing, 1226 Fort Bragg Road. 

Lisa's Custom Framing will present the event providing a place for people to enjoy a glass of wine while viewing the oil paintings of local artist Amy Gaweda. 

Rage Room Experience

Zen with Me Life Coaching hosts a rage room experience from 5-7 p.m. Saturday at Wreck & Release, 1201 Murchison Road.

The event is for girls 12 to 17 years old to help them control their emotions in a safe and effective way that doesn't harm others or themselves.

The event is free, but registration on Eventbrite is required.

Fascinate-U Children's Museum

The Cape Fear Railroaders will showcase their model trains from noon-4 p.m. Saturday at the Fascinate-U Children's Museum, 16 Green St., Fayetteville.

The trains will be on display on the first and third Saturday of the month. Admission is free unless you stay to play in the museum.

Cape Beard's 10th Annual Pig Pickin

Cape Beard: Follicles of Freedom hosts its annual Pig Pickin event from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday at Fort Bragg Harley Davidson, 3950 Sycamore Dairy Road.

The organization will sell $5 barbeque plates in an effort to raise money for the Autism Society of Cumberland County.

There will also be vendors, live music, bouncy houses and an obstacle course.

Admission is free.
