What's Happening: 7 things to do in the Fayetteville area in the coming days

Fayetteville is host to a robust community of artists, shops and eateries. While they offer the regular fare expected of those establishments, they also offer events to fill your social calendar.

On any given week you are bound to happen upon a Latin dance class, or a raucous game of music bingo. If learning new cuisine is your jam, some local businesses bring in chefs to teach the craft of things like sushi making or barbecue.

If you're itching to create art or hone your stage presence, some downtown businesses offer things like painting events and open mic nights.

Here are seven upcoming events in the Fayetteville area:

If you ever wanted to learn the art of sushi rolling, here's your chance. Dirty Whiskey Craft Cocktail Bar in Hope Mills, 5431 Corporation Drive, is hosting Sushi Making 101 with the GringoNinja. The class is 12:30-2:30 p.m. Saturday.

Participants will learn the basics of sushi making, including everything from equipment and preparation, to how to make the rice and the fundamentals of making a sushi roll.

The class is interactive, should be full of laughs, and the host claims you'll leave with your belly full. The class includes 1 drink ticket.

VFW Post 670 hosts a Pig Pickin' and Live Music Fundraiser with music by variety band Reflections II.

The event is 5 p.m. Sunday at VFW Post 670 and Auxiliary, 3928 Doc Bennett Road, Fayetteville.

Cost is $25 for live music and food or $12 for just food. The fundraiser benefits VFW Post 670's Core Programs which reward individuals in the community.

Black BBQ Cook-Off

The second annual I Love My Community Giveaway and first annual Black BBQ Cook-Off is noon-5 p.m. Sunday at the Murchison Road Food Truck Park,

The event features music, dance, writing, visual arts, media, spoken word, and a painter and an illustrator's corner as well.

It is held in conjunction with the Black BBQ Cook-Off, where at least 13 top grill masters will compete for the championship belt.

The cook-off is organized by Bruce Yeomans, Carl “Pbm” Pringle and William Jerome Wright. Celebrity judges are Tiffany Whitfield, Kwame Stover, Jesse Mitchell, Judge Stephen C. Stokes, Food Network Winner Chef Judy, Boxing Champ Michael Williams Jr, NFL Star Greg Gilmore, Fayetteville Mayor Mitch Colvin, Spring Lake Mayor Kia Anthony, Briarwood Cattle Farm LLC.
