Girls' basketball

BLOOMINGTON NORTH 46, NORTHVIEW 33: Ava Robbennolt scored eight of her 11 points in the fourth quarter as the Cougars dominated the last eight minutes in a game played at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. North (10-5), posting its first 10-win season since 2010-11, got off to a slow start, trailing 16-13 at the half, but got going in the third to take a 33-31 lead. Northview was held to just two free throws in the fourth as North put the game away behind a pair of 3s by Robbennolt. Ava Reitmeyer also had 11 points, Mia Robbennolt 10 and Kenli Sullivan eight.

TOBY YOHO CLASSIC: Eastern Greene finished in fifth place with a 50-49 overtime win over South Knox. In the consolation semi, the T-Birds (12-4) handed head coach Joe Pigg win No. 200 with a 46-35 victory over Loogootee. In the opener, Keylee Hudson had 21 points and Kenady Hudson 11. The two combined to go 18-of-20 at the line. The game was tied 19-19 at halftime before Eastern used a 12-4 run in the third to open it up. In the nightcap, The Hudsons were again a tough 1-2 punch, Keylee scoring 22 and Kenady 17. Eastern was 20-of-29 at the line. Regulation ended tied at 44. South Knox led 28-22 at the half before Eastern went up 39-35 after three only to see the Spartans (10-6) rally. Both Hudsons were named to the All-Tournament team.

Owen Valley (6-11) split its games in the ninth-place bracket, losing to Bloomfield 54-46 before beating Martinsville, 54-45 to settle for 11th.

Brownstown Central wound up winning yet another Toby Yoho title, beating Jasper 42-38. The Braves are 34-4 all-time in the tourney.

Boys' basketball

BLOOMINGTON NORTH 45, ZIONSVILLE 43: North overcame a slow start to knock off the Eagles in a game at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. The Cougars (5-3) trailed 7-0 early and then 25-20 at halftime before grabbing a 36-33 lead after three and then hanging on. North led 44-43 with 1:24 to go, hit a free throw in the final minute and watched a potential game-winning 3 by Zionsville (6-4) rim out.

Wrestling

AL SMITH CLASSIC: Bloomington South has been a part of this ultra-tough tournament at Mishawaka for many years, but never had a champion until now. Senior and top-ranked Delaney Ruhlman (21-0) broke the ice by dominating the 170-pound bracket, finishing it off with a pin of Center Grove's Noah Clouser in 1:27. It helped the Panthers take eighth place with 112½ points. Powerhouse Crown Point won it with 318. South also claimed three other podium finishes. Cam Meier (19-3) took third place at 106, coming back from a loss to eighth-ranked Mason Jones of Lake Central with majors of 10-0 and 8-0, the last over No. 7 Kaleb Salazar of Wawasee. At 152, No. 8 Evan Roudebush (20-2) got some revenge in the third place match, topping Center Grove's 11th-ranked Silas Stilts, 5-4. Stilts won their meeting earlier in the tourney, 8-7. And at 145, Hunter Fender (16-9) hung in to take sixth, winning four straight to put himself in position to medal.

Thursday, Dec. 29

Girls' basketball

TOBY YOHO CLASSIC: Eastern Greene went 1-1 in pool play, putting the T-Birds into the fifth-place bracket. Eastern opened with a tough 50-45 loss to Jasper. Keylee Hudson went 7-of-7 at the line and scored 13 of her 19 points in the fourth quarter as Eastern tried to rally from a 35-28 deficit. Kenady Hudson added 17 points. Eastern bounced back wit ha 63-47 win over Southwestern (Hanover). The T-Birds were slated to play Loogootee Friday at 11:15 a.m.

Owen Valley had a rough time, falling to 2A No. 1 North Knox, 46-25 and then dropping a 49-30 decision to Paoli. The Patriots drew Bloomfield to open play at 9:30 a.m. on Friday in the ninth-place bracket.

The championship bracket will see Jasper vs. Trinity Lutheran and Brownstown Central vs. North Knox.

Boys' basketball

SOUTHRIDGE TOURNAMENT: Eastern Greene (5-5) finished up play with a 45-31 win over North Knox in the fifth-place game. T-Birds are at 3A powerhouse North Daviess on Jan. 6.

CLAY CITY TOURNAMENT: Owen Valley (3-5) lost 50-39 to Tri-West to finish fourth.

Wrestling

MOORESVILLE HOLIDAY CLASSIC: Owen Valley finished fifth (146½), with Carmel winning the title (293). Edgewood (66½) was 23rd and Bloomington North (61) was 25th.

Owen Valley claimed the area's only champion as No. 10 Eli Hinshaw (21-0) took the title at 220 pounds, going 5-0 with three pins. He beat No. 15 Alex Rose of Terre Haute South in the final, 6-4. No. 11 Branson Weaver (20-1) was second at 138. He won his semifinal, 9-7 before falling 2-0 to No. 10 Michael Major of Carmel. At 285, Bryce Mills (16-4) was pinned in the semis by No. 4 Dom Burgett of Hamilton Southeastern but bounced back to pin Jesiah Richardson of TH North in 4:06 for third. At 113, Eli Collier (15-7) wound up sixth.

Edgewood's Cash Turner (20-1), ranked fifth at 145, suffered his first loss of the season, 15-8 to eventual champion No. 17 Braeden Spears of Plainfield. Turner then pulled out a 1-0 win over Delta's Kolten Rhonemus and topped Luke Robards of Evansville Central, 3-2, for third. At 113, John Orman (16-5) was fifth, losing to No. 11 Jackson Elliott 3-0 but beating OV's Collier, 5-1.

North's Cael Hickok (20-7) made quite a run at 160 to fourth. getting two pins and a 7-2 decision in the consolation bracket before falling 8-6 to Jorge Franco of TH South. At 152, Jeremiah Casillas (18-8) was sixth, losing twice to Kaeb Stebbins of Delta.

AL SMITH CLASSIC: Four from Bloomington South made it to Day 2: Cam Meier at 106, Hunter Fender at 145, Evan Roudebush at 152 and Delaney Ruhlman at 170. Meier and Ruhlman both made it to the semifinals while Fender and Roudebush stayed alive in the consolation bracket.

Wednesday, Dec. 28

Boys' basketball

RICHMOND (BOB WETTIG) TOURNAMENT: Bloomington South finished as runner-ups again this year, falling to the host Red Devils, 50-41, in the final on Wednesday. Richmond used its pressure defense to jump up 20-12 after one period. South (7-4) trailed by 11 at halftime and got within six in the third before Richmond clamped down again, holding the Panthers to just eight points in the fourth. Ryder Case had 23 points for Richmond, going 8-of-9 at the line. Aiden Schmitz had 12 points on four 3s to pace South, while Zach Sims had eight points and Vincent Moutardier seven. South hit 10 3s and just four 2s. South advanced to the finals with a 56-38 pasting of Lawrenceburg in the semifinals after taking a 22-13 at halftime.

On Tuesday at IU East, South dispatched Eastern Hancock, 67-55 and then North Decatur, .64-51. Against Eastern, South led by one at half before pulling away in the third, holding the Royals to just four points. Gavin Wisley scored 14 points to lead the Panthers while Rhett Johnson added 12 points and Schmitz 11. Schmitz had 19 points against North Decatur.

WABASH VALLEY CLASSIC: Edgewood (2-9) went 1-2, finishing up consolation bracket play on Wednesday with a 54-36 win over Cloverdale, nearly identical to the 57-36 WIC win earlier this season. Xzander Hammonds hit five 3s for 19 points as the Mustangs jumped up 19-4 after one quarter and cruised. Kam Ranard had 10 points and Jacob Boggs nine to go with seven rebounds. Joe West had four steals. On Monday, Edgewood opened with a tough 59-47 loss to Terre Haute South. The Braves led just 39-36 going into the fourth, but pulled away, going 10-of-13 at the line and 20-of-25 overall. Zayvion Baker had 25 points for THS. Hammond had 16 for Edgewood, Mialin White 11 points and seven rebounds, Kam Ranard eight and five and Boggs nine and five. The Mustangs didn't have much enthusiasm going in Tuesday's consolation contest against Robinson, falling 58-32. The Maroons led 12-2 after one and 35-9 by halftime. Hammond had seven points to lead Edgewood.

SOUTHRIDGE TOURNAMENT: Eastern Greene dropped its two pool games on Wednesday, starting with a 47-41 loss to South Central (Elizabeth) and 56-36 to the host Raiders. T-Birds (4-5) will take on North Knox (1-9) for fifth place on Thursday at 2:30 p.m. in a rematch from Dec. 10 Eastern won 45-27.

CLAY CITY TOURNAMENT: Owen Valley started off on Tuesday with a 63-52 win over Riverton Parke, then fell to Clay City, 64-50. The Patriots (4-3) will take on Tri-West (5-4) at 6 p.m. on Thursday at third.

Girls' basketball

TRITON CENTRAL TOURNAMENT: Bloomington North made a strong run to the title game and took the host Tigers deep into the final before falling, 47-37. The Cougars (10-5) trailed just 27-25 heading into the fourth after surviving a long dry spell in the second, and took the lead briefly, 32-31. But the Tigers (11-3) hit 12-of-15 free throws in the period and 21-of-27 overall to pull away late. Kenli Sullivan had 11 points for North, Mia Robbennolt 10 and Ava Robbennolt 7.

On Tuesday, North started tournament play with a 66-59 win over Lawrenceburg. The Cougars dominated the first three quarters, taking a 51-31 lead before the Tigers poured in 28 points in the fourth. Mia Robbennolt had 21 points, Sullivan 14 and Ava Robbennolt 13. Later that evening, North took care of Heritage Christian, 58-48. A 17-7 burst in the second quarter put the Cougars up, 33-21 at the break. Mia Robbennolt and Sullivan each had 14 points and Reitmeyer 13 to lead North.

Triton Central (11-3) 9 | 9 | 9 | 20 — 47

GIBSON COUNTY TOURNAMENT: Edgewood had chances to win its opener but didn't score in the last four minutes and fell to Barr-Reeve, 43-40. The Mustangs (3-9) turned a 36-32 deficit to start the fourth into a 40-36 lead, but couldn't hold on, going just 4-of-11 at the line. Barr-Reeve (8-5) was 11-of-17. Macey Crider had 11 points for Edgewood, Jaylen Robinson and Alayna Flynn had eight each. The tourney will continue on Tuesday, with Edgewood playing at Princeton (11 a.m.) and Wood Memorial (7:30 p.m.).

Wrestling

MOORESVILLE INVITATIONAL: Bloomington North and Edgewood had two wrestlers make it though the first day on Wednesday, while Owen Valley had four who will return for Thursday's finals.

Coming back for Edgewood are: 113 pounds, John Orman (after 3 1st period pins) who meets 2 seed Aiden Dallinger of McCutchen in the semis and at 145, top seed Cash Turner, who meets 4 seed Breeden Spears of Plainfield in the semis. Back for North in the consolation bracket are Jeremiah Casillas at 152 and Cal Hickock at 160. Both lost in the quarters to state-ranked opponents.

OV's semifinalists are 5 seed Eli Crenshaw at 113, who meets top seed Isaac Ash, Monrovia; at 138, 2 seed Branson Weaver at 138, who meets 3 seed Trevor Mitt of Martinsville; top seed Eli Hinshaw at 220, who takes on 5 seed Talen Humphrey of Franklin Central and at 285, 5 seed Bryce Mills meets Dom Burgett of Hamilton Southeastern.
