What's happening in Columbus this weekend? Check out these 10 events

The weekend is nigh and it's gonna be a hot one — both temperature-wise and on the Columbus entertainment scene!

First up, three local theater companies will stage three decidedly disparate productions, including Weathervane Playhouse's depiction of a real-life '50s jam session involving "The Killer" Jerry Lee Lewis, "The Man in Black" Johnny Cash, "The King of Rock 'n' Roll" Elvis Presley, and rockabilly pioneer, guitarist and singer-songwriter Carl Perkins. Expect to hear lots of tunes from the era including "Blue Suede Shoes," an Elvis hit penned by Perkins.

Also, the music of Canada's favorite alt-rock band, Barenaked Ladies, will fill the air during a rain-or-shine performance at Kemba Live, and Natalie's Grandview will host an album release party featuring Columbus' own Dave Buker and the Historians.

Heading into next week, highlights will include the Easton Town Center "Movies by Moonlight" series opener, “Lightyear,” and the sharp political wit of Hari Kondabolu at the Funny Bone.

Reimagined 'Robin Hood' continues run

Actors' Theatre of Columbus will continue its swashbuckling adventures in Sherwood Forest as the company's reimagining of "Robin Hood" runs each weekend through June 18 in Schiller Park Amphitheater, 1000 City Park Ave. Performances are at 8 p.m. Thursdays through Sundays. More romantic and socially conscious than the familiar classic, this two-act production was co-written by artistic director Philip J. Hickman (who also directs) and his wife, Mikelle Hickman-Romine. Bring your own chair or blanket and enjoy! All shows are free; donations will be accepted at intermission. Otterbein Summer Theatre says, 'I Do! I Do!'

Otterbein Summer Theatre will follow 50 years in the life of a married couple in "I Do! I Do!," a two-character musical focusing on Agnes and Michael as they navigate the ups and downs of life from 1895 to 1945. The production opens at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in Fritsche Theatre at Cowan Hall, 30 S. Grove St., Westerville. Other performances will be at 8 p.m. Friday-Saturday and June 8-9; and 2 p.m. Sunday and June 10. Tickets are $33. Otterbein faculty, staff and full-time students receive free tickets, which must be reserved in person with a valid Cardinal Card at the theater box office, online or via the QR code on production posters. Art imitates life in 'Million Dollar Quartet'

Find out what happens when four music legends gather for an impromptu jam session at a Memphis recording studio when Weathervane Playhouse presents "Million Dollar Quartet" this weekend and next in the company's theater at 100 Price Road, Newark. The jukebox musical dramatizes the real-life Million Dollar Quartet session with Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and Elvis Presley at the Sun Record Studios in 1956 and includes such hits as “Blue Suede Shoes,” “I Walk the Line,” “Great Balls of Fire” and “Hound Dog.” The show, which contains some adult language and adult themes, is suitable for teens and older. Barenaked Ladies to share musical humor

If you've ever watched "The Big Bang Theory," then you've heard Barenaked Ladies, the Toronto band behind the show's theme, as well as hits like "One Week" and "If I Had $1,000,000." You can hear those and other tunes on Friday when they come to Kemba Live, 405 Neil Ave., with Semisonic and Del Amitri. Doors open at 6 p.m. Currently on their "Last Summer on Earth" tour, BNL is known for catchy pop hooks and tongue-in-cheek humor. In addition to selling 15 million records worldwide, they've hosted a cruise, had their own ice cream flavor, won eight Juno Awards, and were inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 2018. Local band to play album release show

Columbus-based Americana band Dave Buker and the Historians will celebrate the release of their new album, "Heirlooms," with a show on the Music Hall Stage at Natalie's Grandview, 945 King Ave., at 8 p.m. Friday. Doors open at 7 p.m. Produced with support from the Greater Columbus Arts Council, "Heirlooms" includes the single "Stubborn Blood," released last October. Buker and the Historians have been showcased twice by WOSU-TV’s Broad & High, featured in numerous publications, and performed at the 2017 Bunbury Music Festival, along with Death Cab For Cutie and The Shins. Special guest will be folk/American duo Wiloh. Tickets are $12 in advance and $15 day of show for seating, and $10 standing-room general admission. (nataliesgrandview.com)

Famous Jazz Orchestra to host jazz trumpeter

On Monday, Vaughn Wiester's Famous Jazz Orchestra will welcome trumpeter Ed Morrison, whose accomplishments include playing with such notables as The Temptations, Frankie Valli, The Four Tops, Fabian and Kevin Mahogany, among others. Morrison also leads an 18-piece band, A Touch of Brass, freelances with various groups playing genres from salsa to funk and gospel, and cites trumpeter Doc Severinsen as his biggest influence. The show begins at 7:30 p.m. at the Clintonville Woman’s Club, 3951 N. High St. Cover charge is $15 for adults, $10 for students, cash only at the door. 'Lightyear' first up in outdoor movie series

Grab your popcorn, pillows and blankets for a month of cinema under the stars, as the Easton Town Center "Movies by Moonlight" series kicks off with a showing of “Lightyear” on Tuesday at dusk (approximately 8 p.m.) at Easton’s Town Square (south of Brio). Other movies in the free series will be “DC League of Super Pets” (June 13); “Back to the Future” (June 20); and “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish” (June 27). Political comedian to tickle Funny Bone

Called “one of the most exciting political comics in stand-up” by the New York Times, Hari Kondabolu will come to the Funny Bone, 145 Easton Town Center, at 7:30 p.m. June 7. Doors open at 6:15 p.m. Touring in support of his new comedy special, “Vacation Baby” (available for free on YouTube), Kondabolu is an NPR favorite who has guested on programs including "Fresh Air with Terry Gross" and "All Things Considered," and is a regular panelist on the weekly game show “Wait Wait … Don’t Tell Me." He also has performed on many late-night talk shows and produced a critically lauded documentary, "The Problem with Apu," about the stereotypical character on "The Simpsons." Rose Run Fest returning to New Albany

The 2nd annual New Albany Rose Run Fest will open with brass fanfare and an ice cream social at 6:30 p.m. June 7 at New Albany United Methodist Church, 20 3rd St. At 7:30 p.m., the New Albany Symphony Orchestra and Chorus will preview the program for their upcoming European tour. The four-day fest also will offer a German cooking class, polka lessons, performances by New Albany Youth Theatre’s "Shrek Jr." cast and more. A finale concert at 8 p.m. June 10 at the Hinson Amphitheater, 170 E. Dublin Granville Road, will include a performance of Brahms' Double Concerto with New Albany Symphony Orchestra conductor Luis Biava on cello and Ariane Sletner on violin. Lawn tickets for the finale are $25 general admission and $20 for students and seniors. Individual reserved table seats are $55. Tables of 8 are $400. NAMI walks to support mental health

The Franklin County chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) will hold its biggest fundraiser of the year, NAMIWalks, from 8 a.m. to noon June 10 in Wolfe Park, 105 Park Drive. The goal for this year's 5K walk is $100,000. NAMI is the nation’s largest grassroots mental health organization devoted to building better lives for the millions of Americans affected by mental illness, as well as promoting better understanding and reducing the stigma of mental illness. There is no registration fee for NAMIWalks, and every registered participant who raises $100 will receive an official NAMIWalks 2023 event T- shirt. (namiwalks.org)
