MassMu will launch its 16th consecutive NEA Big Read with a free, public event from 1 to 3 p.m. April 1. Guests can receive a complimentary copy of this year’s book, “Interior Chinatown,” by Charles Yu, and step on the Massillon Public Library Bookmobile.

Highlights

The NEA Big Read brings together MassMu’s diverse community with events connected to the themes of “Interior Chinatown” hosted by the Museum, Massillon Public Library, Soroptimist International of Canton/Stark County, Strauss Studios, Washington High School, Kent Downtown Gallery, Women’s Impact, BeYoutiful Weirdo and Perry Sippo Branch of Stark County District Library.

The NEA Big Read restores reading to the center of American culture and to encourage reading for pleasure and enlightenment. “Interior Chinatown” depicts the immigrant experience, familiar relationships and the yearning to escape the pressure of conformity.

Receptions for two exhibitions that complement the NEA Big Read will be held during the kickoff. In the “Finding Identity: Heritage as Inspiration exhibition,” Aimee Lee, Chi Wong and Jordan Wong, three Asian American artists who live in Ohio, connect their work to “Interior Chinatown.”

“Accessible Expressions Ohio,” presented by Art Possible Ohio, is a juried exhibition of artwork created by artists with disabilities.

Other exhibitions can also be viewed during the kickoff – “Tigers vs. Bulldogs: Origins of a Historic Rivalry,” Alison Alsup, “Prairies to Peaks: Biking to Colorado’s Tallest Mountain,” Art Educator of the Year finalists, the Immel Circus, and “Innovators of Massillon,” as well as exhibitions in the Massillon History Gallery, Albert E. Hise Fine and Decorative Arts Gallery, Edward and Louise Mahoney Family Gallery, Judith Paquelet American Indian Gallery, and Photography Gallery.
