Susan Reid of Newark will talk about her sister Jerrie Mock’s adventure as the first female to fly solo around the world at the Massillon Museum’s next Brown Bag Lunch program on July 25.
The program will begin at 12:10 p.m. and conclude about 12:50 p.m. to accommodate lunch-hour guests.
Highlights
On her landmark flight, Mock piloted an 11-year-old single engine Cessna 180 christened the Spirit of Columbus and nicknamed “Charlie.” The trip began March 19, 1964, at Port Columbus in Ohio and ended April 17, 1964, also in Columbus. Copies of the book she authored about her trip, Thirty-Eight Charlie, will be available for sale at the Brown Bag Lunch.
A retired teacher and school librarian, Reid holds a bachelor of education degree from Ohio University and a master of library science degree from Kent State University. In addition to relating her sister’s story, Reid studies and presents programs about women throughout the history of flight, focusing on the contributions of female pilots during World War II.
Reid, an avid reader, gardener, and golfer, is active in the international Philanthropic Educational Organization, which is, according to its website, “women helping women reach for the stars” through educational opportunities. She has two daughters and two granddaughters.
