What's next for Tony Mitchell, Alabama football 2023 DB commit, after recruiting decision

The race for Tony Mitchell is over.

The Alabama football five-star defensive back commit now turns his attention to a few different things after he chose the Crimson Tide over Georgia, Auburn and Texas A&M Sunday.

One of the biggest advantages Mitchell gets from committing now is a clearer plate during his senior senior at Thompson, which has won the last three AHSAA 7A state championships.

Alabama doesn't yet have a specific position for the versatile defensive back at the next level, and it may never.

Mitchell, the No. 15 class of 2023 recruit in the nation according to the 257Sports Composite, has played plenty of safety and cornerback, including the slot.

He could play anywhere from safety, outside cornerback or the star position at Alabama. Mitchell, the nation's No. 2 cornerback, will continue to hone his skills as he looks to end his career with a fourth state title.

"I'd say that it's a good thing (to not know my future position) because I'm very versatile, not a one-position player," Mitchell told the Tuscaloosa News. "I'll be able to get on the field quicker. Just got to go in there and work."

Like his former teammate and five-star Alabama freshman edge Jeremiah Alexander, Mitchell will become a recruiter for Alabama.

Alexander, the top in-state 2022 recruit, lobbied for recruits from California to Texas and at Thompson during his senior season with the Warriors.

He went after Mitchell and teammate Peter Woods, a 2023 five-star defensive end, who will announce his decision July 8. Mitchell is on the same mission, and he has a strong network.

Two out-of-state Alabama targets Mitchell is recruiting are Georgia five-star safety Caleb Downs and No. 1 cornerback Cormani McClain, who plays in Mitchell's hometown of Lakeland, Florida.

"Me and (Downs) have been cool since my freshman year because we work out with (Oliver Davis), the defensive back guru," Mitchell said. "I met Caleb through him, and we've just been good friends since seeing each other in 7-on-7 and all that type of stuff. I think he's a good player. I want him to come join the Tide, so I'm going to be on him."
