What's open, closed in and around Springfield, Illinois on Election Day, Nov. 8

Election Day in Illinois is Tuesday, Nov. 8, and is a holiday, meaning state offices and most schools will be closed.

Gov. JB Pritzker signed a bill in June 2021 establishing the holiday temporarily. Nineteen states have some form of Election Day holiday.

All polling places are open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Election Day.

A federal holiday to coincide with Election Day has been proposed but has not been enacted. Federal workers are allowed to take up to four hours of administrative leave to vote.

There is mail delivery on Election Day and banks will be open.

Government buildings

Federal buildings and courts will be open.

State of Illinois buildings and courts and Sangamon County buildings and courts will be closed for the day. City of Springfield offices, including Lincoln Library and administrative offices at Oak Ridge Cemetery, will be open and operate normal business hours.

Schools

Springfield School District 186 students will not be in session. Ball-Chatham, Williamsville-Sherman and Rochester school districts are closed.

Sacred Heart-Griffin High School and Lutheran High School will not hold classes, but Calvary Academy will be in session.

The University of Illinois Springfield campus will be closed. Lincoln Land Community College and Midwest Technical Institute will be open.

Sangamon Mass Transit District buses will be running regular service.

Other attractions

Sites like the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum, the Lincoln Home and the Dana-Thomas House will be open regular hours.
