What's Open, Closed On New Year's Day In MA

On New Year’s Day, Bay Staters will leave behind a year marked by unprecedented hardship and challenges. After spending much of the year navigating the once-in-a-lifetime coronavirus pandemic, many will no doubt welcome 2021 with open arms.

As we ring in the new year in our town, many local facilities and government offices will take the day off to recognize the start of the new year.

Here’s a look at what’s open and closed in Massachusetts on New Year's Day:

Government

  • City/Town Halls and offices: Closed

  • State courthouses: Closed

  • Federal courthouses: Closed

  • Federal offices: Closed

  • State offices: Closed

  • Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV): Closed

Transportation, Banks, Mail

  • MBTA: No ferry service, all other modes will run on a Sunday schedule

  • Banks: Most banks are closed, call your local branch.

  • U.S. Post Office: Closed

  • FedEx: Stores closed

  • Bed, Bath & Beyond: Open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

  • Dick’s Sporting Goods: Open 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
