What's open and what's closed in and around Springfield on Good Friday

Eleven states recognize Good Friday, April 15, as a U.S. federal holiday or an optional holiday, though Illinois is not one of them.

There is U.S. postal service delivery on Friday. Most banks are open.

Christians mark Good Friday as the commemoration of the crucifixion and death of Christ. On the Eastern Orthodox calendar, Great and Holy Friday falls on April 22.

Friday also is the first evening of Passover, or Pesach, which celebrates the exodus of the Israelites from slavery in Egypt.

Except Christmas, religious holidays in the U.S. are not designated as federal holidays. However, states can decide to make a day a public holiday on an individual basis.

Here's what is open and what is closed in the Springfield area Good Friday:

Government offices and courts

All federal, state of Illinois and Sangamon County offices and courts will be open.

City of Springfield offices, including Lincoln Library, will be closed. Lincoln Library will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday but closed again on Sunday for Easter.

District 186, parochial schools and CACC

District 186 schools are closed Friday and Monday for designated teacher institute days. The Capital Area Career Center follows the same schedule.

The district's board of education meeting is at 6:30 p.m. Monday.

Lutheran High School, Calvary Academy and Sacred Heart-Griffin High School all begin their Easter breaks Friday.

Springfield Catholic grade schools are also out on Friday.

Colleges and universities

The University of Illinois Springfield, Lincoln Land Community College and Lincoln College all have regularly scheduled classes Friday. Lincoln Christian University is out on break.

Midwest Technical Institute is on break Good Friday and Easter Monday.

SMTD

Sangamon Mass Transit District buses operate on a regular schedule Friday.

Tourist sites

The Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum is open regular hours (9 a.m. to 5 p.m.) on Friday. The Lincoln Home and Lincoln Tomb are also open.
