What's Open New Year's Eve, Day 2021 In East Providence

EAST PROVIDENCE, RI — While New Year’s Day is often a day to recover from the previous night's festivities, if you do plan to head out, it’s good to know how the holiday may affect the availability of services in Rhode Island.

New Year’s Day is one of several holidays that usually affect the hours of government offices, libraries, public transportation, garbage pickup and other services. However, because the holiday falls on Saturday, many services and businesses will observe it on Friday, instead.

To help you plan, here’s a roundup of what’s open and what’s closed on New Year’s Eve and Day in Rhode Island.

  • State-run coronavirus test sites: Some open until 2 p.m. Friday, all closed New Year's Day.

  • Liquor stores: Thanks to a new law, Rhode Island liquor stores can open on New Year's Day.

  • Grocery stores: Most open regular hours, some may have shorter holiday hours.

  • Convenience stores: Open at owner's discretion

  • Restaurants, bars: Open at owner's discretion

  • Banks: Closed Friday

  • Libraries: Closed Friday

  • Stock market: Closed Friday

  • Municipal, state, federal offices: Closed Friday

  • Mail: Regular mail delivery Friday, no service and post offices closed Saturday.

  • RIPTA: Sunday/Holiday schedule on Friday.

  • Trash Collection: Because the holiday is at the end of the week, trash pickup is not affected.
