Mice Problem

"Can I talk about the mice in the kitchen of my last apartment again? We became so overrun (at least in my mind) that I kept a Britta in my bedroom so I wouldn't even have to go in the kitchen for water. I'm not proud of how I let the mice win, but it's true." --Anya Strzemein, Stylelist, Stylelist Home and Huffington Post Style Editor Flickr photo by illustir

Bug Infestation

"We sublet an apartment in Brooklyn when we first moved back from LA, and the cockroaches in the kitchen were as big as house cats. I can't say more than that because my gag reflex is working up." --Christina Anderson, Stylelist Fashion Editor Flickr photo by Christopher Althouse Cohen

Broken Closet Door

"Not only is my closet incredibly small (even by New York standards), only half of it works. The sliding doors only pull back on one side, making it impossible to reach the back. As a temporary solution, I keep a lot of my clothes artfully draped over pieces of furniture. I'm not messy--I'm just trying to work with what I've got!" --Kathryn Kattalia, Stylelist Home Intern Photo by Kathryn Kattalia

Dog Droppings

"A few years ago in D.C., I lived in very large complex that allowed pets, which was perfectly fine. The only thing is pet owners never picked up their dogs' droppings -- so it was everywhere and smelled!" --Diana Nguyen, Stylelist Home Associate Editor Flickr photo by Mr. T in DC

Hole In The Wall

"My roommate and I were living in a small converted space and there was a ladder inside the apartment that led up to the roof. It was completely boarded up with a piece of wood so we thought it was fine. Not so much. On one of the coldest days during winter, the wood cracked and basically left a hole at the top of the ladder in our ceiling and cold wind basically blew into the apartment. We called to have it fix, but let's just say it was a very cold winter for me that year." --Dickson Wong, Stylelist Home Editor Flickr photo by mia3mom

Apartment Flood

"A good friend of mine was living in a studio apartment. Every so often, her toilet would overflow while she was taking a shower, flooding her entire apartment. After the fourth time, she threatened to sue the landlord, so he lowered her rent until her lease was up." --Rebecca Adams, Stylelist Intern Flickr photo by KimCarpenter NJ

A few weeks later during a storm water leaked into my apartment I reported the incident to building maintenance several times. The roof was never fixed a few weeks later Hurricane Irene hit MD and the entire ceiling collapsed it rained in my apartment for over 8 hours straight. I had to call the city inspector to have it fixed since the maintenance department was inept

Bed Bugs, Mice, and Moths

Heidi Sauser:
My first apartment had a simultaneous bed bug, mouse, and grain moth infestation. It was a studio apartment and most nights I would have to sleep in the bed with the bugs to avoid being run over by the mice running around on the floor. I had to throw out most anything that contained flour or grain because of the moths. Did I mention the police had to go through my apartment window because they thought my neighbor killed his wife? When they raised the rent by $300 a month, it was time to get out.

Cockroach colony

vanleek:
I was helping my daughter clean before she moved into her new apartment in Savannah which she was sharing with two other people. Every time we moved a rug or piece of furniture cockroaches scattered and there were tons of dead insects. Turns out there was a cockroach colony in the foundation. Fortunately we were able to back out in time

Apt from hell

The bedroom floor was flooded, no explanation. The kitchen light cover fell down and hit me. And they moved a refrigerator in here that doesn't fit. Now I can only open my laundry room door halfway.

Security Deposit Nightmare!

Kriff:
After moving out of our first apartment, my then fiancee (now husband) and I only received a very small amount of money back from our security deposit for things we were told we didn't need to take care of. Being strapped for cash, we didn't argue. We put the check into our account and paid several bills (including rent for our new apartment). A week later, I went to check our balance to go Christmas shopping, and our account showed -$900! Turns out the management group sent us our deposit on a check that no longer had an account. They wrote us another check. That too, bounced, for the same reason. Our bank froze our account because they thought we were writing bad checks. They wrote us a third check, which we refused to accept. We went to a lawyer. After about 3 months of hemming and hawing, they finally sent us a check for the full deposit refund which did not bounce.
